The ViewLondon Review
Overlooking Leicester Square, Ruby Blue, with its restaurant, bar and club, blends all your needs into one to create a big night out under one roof.
The Venue
At the entrance of Ruby Blue you are met by a group of stern bouncers, which may seem a little off-putting at first, but this is pretty much par for the course in this part of town. Once you're admitted, proceed up a flight of stairs, past the bar and into the restaurant, where you
are met by an impressive, contemporary decor of brown walls lined with cream, pink and brown canvases, and oversized low-lit chandeliers.
The restaurant is modern and stylish, providing an intimate and enjoyable place to grab a bite to eat and a cocktail or two. The only slight downside is that you have to leave the restaurant and enter the bar to get to the loos. The upstairs bar continues
with the contemporary theme, providing the perfect place to enjoy a quieter drink or as a preparation point before you head downstairs for a night of dancing. The basement club is lined with frescoed ceilings and marbled floors, making Ruby Blue a
visually stunning location to enjoy a night out.
The Atmosphere
Overall, Ruby Blue attracts big crowds of people who are ready to party. Luckily, friendly staff are on hand to cater to party-goers needs, whether you’re looking for a chilled or upbeat night out.
In the restaurant staff are tentative and there is a happy buzz. It’s host to a range of people who all appear very content with their choice. With such a central location you may assume that the venue is full of tourists but this isn’t the case as the
place is packed with couples, workmates and groups. A pianist nestled in the corner provides live jazz for the night and creates a chilled atmosphere.
Elsewhere in the venue, the upstairs bar offers a more intimate vibe in comparison to the downstairs club, which is energetic and full of people looking for a night of serious drinking and dancing.
The Food
Their traditional grill menu has a wide range of dishes to suit most tastes. To kick off your dining experience order their generous portion of warm bread and oils (£3), which is more then enough to feed four people and contain those hunger pangs as you
wait for your starter. With delicious starters from £3.95, making a decision to choose just one is a difficult task. At £4.95, the smooth chicken liver pate is accompanied by a sweet red onion jam that cuts through the dish perfectly when spread onto the
side of olive-flecked bloomer bread. Their oven baked Camembert (£5.50) is, again, topped with red onion jam and is melted to perfection, oozing when the accompanying slices of warm bread are dunked in. Each starter is presented beautifully with swirls
of balsamic glaze lining the plate.
Whilst waiting for your main to arrive you may suffer from a serious amount of food envy as wooden boards stacked with burgers and chips whiz pass, this is until the arrival of the mixed grill. At £17.95 the plate comes piled high with generous portions of
perfectly cooked steak, tender lamb chop, Cumberland sausage, chicken breast, mushrooms, tomatoes and crispy onion rings, all topped off with a free-range egg and a side of chips. Most people will struggle to finish this gargantuan serving. Along with
this Ruby Blue favourite is the Ruby Surf and Turf that combines a char-grilled steak with half a Canadian lobster drizzled with garlic butter and served with chips. Unfortunately, upon digging into the shell it lacks the lobster meat to justify the price tag of £19.95.
The steak, however, is great and the chunky chips are ideal for mopping up the juices. Sides start from £3 and their fine green beans are recommended, they offer a garlic kick that’s not too overpowering.
All of the desserts weigh in at £5.50 and the addition of a layer of blueberry muffin to their sherry trifle makes it a delicious must try, with just the right amount of sherry flavouring. Alternatively, the Eton Mess served with strawberries
and drizzled in cream satisfies any sweet tooth and is the perfect end to a lovely meal.
The Drink
With an extensive drinks list, staff are more then happy to make recommendations. Cocktails range from £6.40 and include selections such as the standard Margarita, Mai Tai and Cosmopolitan. Their signature cocktails include the Mixxas Fuzzy
Strawberry for £6.40. A mix of peach schnapps, melon and strawberry liqueurs shaken with orange and strawberry puree and served in a tall slick glass, it does not disappoint. Also recommended are the Raspberry Collins and Berry Impressive, both of which
are wonderfully moreish.
From £6.65, there are a wide variety of Champagne cocktails, including the standard Bellini along with a list of shooters. Here you will find the usual B52 (£5), but for £6.40 you can get a Jager B, which is a powerful concoction of Red Bull and
Jagermeister.
There’s an impressive selection of wines, most of which can be ordered either by the glass (small and large) or by the bottle. For £13.50 you can get a bottle of their house Castelbello white or red.
It’s also worth noting that Ruby Blue offer a more than generous happy hour which runs from 5pm-8pm, giving you 50 percent off selected wines, cocktails at £3.95, and Starorpramen for £2.50.
