When " Rules becomes Rudes' "last Thursday 24th we spend a rather strange and very unconfortable evening in this, at first very friendly and welcoming & so British Restaurant (we are a french Chilean family) ; the place being recommanded to us by a good friend living in London : at first excellent welcoming, excellent cocktails (i recommend the magic Gin and Apple Cocktail ) main courses succulent, fine cuisine, croquant vegtables accompanying the most delicious lamb I've ever eaten. Very professional staff, a very friendly waiter attended us, much too friendly apparently as the clock approached midnight. It really sounded like in Clockwork orange. Verbal harrassment increased between him and his manager/ colleague, who desperately wanted to get us out and home very quickly by even offering a taxi, we did not even asked for. English diplomacy I suppose ; we accelerated to finish off our desert (so unique I really recommend the plum trifle ) as the waiters' conversation deteriorated behind us, ending with the firing of our waiter ( Hungarian ) because of his slowliness of getting us out of the place! I would not mention the details of the racist tone that then followed. We left with a very bitter taste such a at first unique place ; a worm spoilt the sweet apple! We feel very sorry and guilty for what happened to our waiter (hopefully not).

We went to Rules to celebrate a PhD graduation but were very disappointed. After waiting for 45 minutes for our main courses, the waiter said that they will arrive imminently. After another 15 minutes wait I asked him how long it will be, only to be reminded that he already told me. When I said that this was 15 minutes ago, he just walked off. Once the mains arrived, one was rather burnt (meat) and the fish wasn't fully cooked. On top of this experience, they added £15 service charge which I refused to pay. No apology from the manager, no complimentary desserts or drinks to make up for their mistake. For this price level (very expensive), we were very disappointed and can't recommend this restaurant. We certainly won't be eating there again!

Rules does wonderfully cooked traditional dishes and atmosphere by the bucketful. What more could you ask from Rules? And they have some divine wines.

We came to London to celebrate our 22nd anniversary. Posh hotel, posh restaurant and a show. Hotel was great, show was great, restaurant was a flop. We arrived at Rules at 6.30 to give us at leat 90 minutes to eat before leaving for our show. We were greeted and seated, we ordered our starters and they arrived within 15 minutes of arriving. They were OK, but nothing to sing and dance about. After they were cleared at around 7.00, it took another 30 minutes before our main courses arrived. My wife had ordered Steak (med/well), it arrived rare and was returned, by the time a new one arrived it was 7.45, and it too was rare. By the time the Rules restaurant manager had been summoned it was 7.50, we had run out of time, and so my wife ended up having only a starter. The steak was removed from the bill, but they had the cheek to add a 12.5% service charge. Despite sending at least 4 letters to the owner, he has not had the decency to respond. Needless to say, our anniversary was ruined.

I have never had a poor experience or a bad meal at Rules. Every time I've been in London, I dine with family or friends or both in this fine establishment. The last meal was a fine jugged rabbit (rabbit cooked in a gravy made from the animal's blood)it was quite tasty - different and thoroughly enjoyable. I can't wait for another trip to London town so I can try something a little more exotic at Rules. Particularly enjoyed being seated for New Year's Eve and at Christmas without having to book a year ahead as one needs to do in, say, New York City!

Rules was a wonderful experience, the service was excellent & every need was catered for. My main was the lamb with creamy mash. It could not have been prepared more perfectly - compliments to the new chef & all of the staff for keeping this restaurant as good as I hear it used to be!
