On the periphery of Borough, Ruse attempts to rouse locals into appreciating a higher class of establishment than the run of the mill pub.

The Venue
On the quieter end of Borough High Street, Ruse strives to offer local workers and residents a stylish lounge bar complete with cocktails and tapas - without the hefty price tag of central London. With a haphazard combination of sleek chic and flocked flourishes, the overall look involves flashes of colour alleviating a muted palette. It almost works, but seems to try a little too hard to create a fashionable bar without quite achieving it. Yet it is still comfortable, spacious, and more polished than most of the other local establishments.

The Atmosphere
Weeknights is when Ruse comes into its own, with after-workers getting cosy on the sofas over drinks and lively music. The buzz makes the place come alive, and though the crowd isn’t particularly geared towards students or bar flies, all feel welcome to relax here. For a serious lads' night, poker night on Thursdays increases the testosterone levels. Conversely, Friday night is one big party, complete with cheesy karaoke and the boozy clientele that comes with it. It may not be swish, contemporary or cool, but the customers enjoy it as a boozy start to the weekend.

The Food
Tapas is a popular and cheap option here, with dishes starting from around £3.50 for a broad combination of interesting Spanish and more simple flavours.

The Drink
Prices here are more than reasonable, making it all too easy to end up spending more money. A small but decent selection of cocktails are offered at £4.50 each. The sex on the beach is extremely sweet, the mojito a little too bitter, but the cosmopolitan is delicious and well balanced. A large glass of wine is also £4.50, with bottles going up to £17.50. The choice is limited but drinkable. The standard selection of spirits are served at £3.25 for a single a mixer, with pints of beer around the same price point.

The Last Word
Offering elements of central London bars, with a far more laid-back attitude, Ruse is worth a visit for south of the river punters.
