The ViewLondon Review
If it’s simple, home cooked comfort food that you want, visit this S & M Cafe. The VenueQuietly tucked away near Portobello Road, this cosy little cafe is the ideal place to enjoy the great British classic – sausage and mash. The cafe offers a wide selection of tasty unpretentious meals including several vegetarian options. The decor is retro and trendy, with a checked floor, high wooden seats and glossy blue tabletops.
The AtmosphereThroughout the week, this S & M Cafe is very quiet so you won’t need to book a table. A mixture of music is played at a comfortable level and there are a couple of tables outside for those that wish to eat al fresco. This venue is cosy and casual – like a posh greasy spoon, with good quality food instead of oily all-day breakfasts.
The FoodAlthough a visit to S & M Cafe isn’t complete without trying the sausages and mashed potato, if you’re in the mood for starters try the prawn cocktail which has a wonderful, tangy marie rose sauce and fresh tasty prawns, or the garlic mushrooms on toast which are sauteed in garlic butter and served on chunky brown toast.
When it’s time for the sausage and mash, you can choose from a variety of sausages, mashed potato and finish with a splash of gravy. The pork, leek and chilli sausages are suitably succulent with a satisfying kick, whilst the traditional brought back memories of good home cooking. The vegetarian spinach and mature cheddar sausages are also very tasty with delicious strong cheese throughout. For mash, try the traditional mash which is creamy, buttery and nice and smooth on the tongue – finish this with a dash of house gravy, which has a nice consistency, good meaty taste and doesn’t drown the meal.
If you have room (it’ll be difficult) try the chocolate brownie with cream or custard, which is a small square of wickedness, slightly bitter and gooey – divine. The Eton Mess is also a good choice, with sweet strawberries, cream and gorgeous crunchy meringue.
The DrinkS & M Cafe serves a range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages – wines, beers and spirits. For a taste of truly cheap cafe prices, the tea and coffee start from as little as just under a pound.
The Last WordS & M Cafe on Portobello Road is a nice little cafe to meet friends, offering a range of good, honest comfort food.
