I visited San Lorenzo last week during the 1st week of Wimbledon. I have been there previously but my exprience last week was very poor, so much so that I will not return. The food was OKish but totally over priced. They had done a new menu for the two weeks of Wimbledon and hiked the prices right up (not a good idea!). The service was dreadful...one doesnt expect the waitress to be chewing gum when one is paying in excess of £28 for a main course!
I was at San Lorenzo last night. Tried their new menu, called Spuntini, didn't have the chance to ask what that means though. Loved the idea, loved the food, it gives you a choice for main menu or this more day to day affordable for the time being. As usual the staff were very helpful and genuine. Will be coming back for more Spuntini and highly recommend this delightful restaurant.
First time for me, after 4 months in the area. Not a very high profile place, can hardly even spot it from the high street, but what a find.. Hands down the best Italian food in wimbledon...and we've been eveywhere else. It's sort of old fashioned but up to date as well. weird. We loved it and the staff aren't your typical eastern european automatons...they're quite laid back and genuine, if a little distracted. It's the kind of vibe we go for anyway. No pushy upselling either.
we were told it's expensive but actually the food can't be beat and it's really good value. It feels like the real thing, not your typical franchise chain or pretentious fusion cuisine. Wines a bit expensive, mind. Come on San Lorenzo, do us proud and bring the house wines down a bit!
We went last night and were sorely disappointed!
Place was half empty and we were seated outside and it was very chilly and the wall heater was turned away from us to the table next door so we sat and shivered...rusty table, no cloth and plastic garden chairs from the pound shop.
£13.50 bought 8 crostini four with burnt edges. Calves liver = two slices of liver + two of very very salty bacon, sage leaves and 8 pieces of long cooked diced potato = no butter sauce nothing =£17.50.
My husbands piece of wild sea bream was more like a tadpole, 8 pieces of potato and 4 cherry tomatoes = £20!
I tatty dessert, 1 beer, 1 orange juice + two coffees = no wine as we were driving =£90
(Plus the toilets were dirty with paper all over the floor and no hand towels to dry my hands) NO WONDER THE PLACE WAS EMPTY
We visited San Lorenzo last weekend 20/12 for a family dinner, the quality of the food was as always excellent - however, the poor service we received ruined the evening - the staff were obviously waiting to close (11pm) and trying to avoid serving coffee at the end of the meal.
Our final bill was in excess of £500.00 for 8 dinners which included a 12.5% service charge and a pathetic £1.50 per head cover charge which seemed money grabbing.
There was no personal touch about this restaurant, nobody asked if we had enjoyed our evening or thanked us for our visit - 2009 will be a hard time for restaurants and we will be frequenting other restaurants who appreciate our custom and offer a more personal and friendlier approach
I went with a friend just before those lucky enough to have Centre Court tickets left the tennis.
We hadn't booked but they still found us a table, although and understandably, for a limited time of an hour and a half.
This gave us enough time to have the food we wanted, with wine and a coffee.
At this time of year the restaurant is going to be busy, so we were pleased they made space for us. Pizza was a little on the cold side when it arrived.
Service pleasant as always - this is a favourite of ours during Wimbledon you see lots of tennis plyers and stars in here.
Remember to book - it's always safest
San Lorenzo Fuoriporta is a good venue for a big group meal. The food is delicious Italian fare and there's something on the menu for everyone.
They have a good selection of drinks at San Lorenzo Fuoriporta and I'd recommend this restaurant. Very nice.
