The ViewLondon Review
Competing in an area already crowded with Indian restaurants, Sangri hopes to capture a more discerning clientele.
The Venue
Sangri a pleasant, fresh contemporary look. Not a single piece of red velvet or gold chintz in sight. Whitewashed walls sparsely adorned with the occasional frame and sumptuous red leather chairs makes for an easy and comfortable ambience.
The Atmosphere
Modern, bright, crisp and low level progressive Indian music gives the impression of space and calmness. The waiters are attentive and enthusiastic in their recommendations of dishes on the menu. However, their explanations seem slightly confused.
The Food
Naturally, everything about Sangri exudes contemporary, which includes its presentation of such classic dishes as Onion Bhaji and Potato Pakora for the starters.
The lunch menu at £6.50 provides a choice of Chicken Tikka Masala (not an original Indian dish) – so red it matches the colour of the leather chairs and Chicken Jalfrezi among other usual suspects. Far more promising and original are the side orders such as Potato Curry and Butternut Squash, which are delicately executed and have a melt in the mouth quality. The squiggles and other fancy tricks decorating the plates are pretty pointless and add nothing to your meal other than demonstrating a creative streak.
The Drink
At £5.00 a bottle of Cobra, you can soon find yourself paying a small fortune on beer alone. The wine list is adequate but as with any spicy food, not entirely appropriate as any redeeming virtue in the bottle will be overpowered by the fiery curry on your plate.
The Last Word
Sangri is a modern twist on Indian cuisine and an attempt to break free of the usual stereotypical offerings on every high street.
