Sedir offers just ok Turkish cooking in an area positively overrun with Mediterranean food.
The Venue
Just off Upper Street in Islington, Sedir has hot competition from about half a dozen other Turkish restaurants in the immediate vicinity. The upstairs room is good for parties, although it looks disconcertingly like a Swiss chalet. The very ordinary eating room on the ground floor is kept simple and functional with wooden tables, and there are a few small tables on the pavement as well.
The Atmosphere
Sedir doesn’t usually get as crowded as its neighbours, so you’ll get more elbow room and there are better chances to get a table. Staff are nice enough, and the venue would be best for a party as long as you specify which dishes you want for a set menu. They also do a lunchtime special which is good value for Islington workers.

The Food
Nothing tastes as fresh and simple as it should, which is strange concerning the cuisine is minimal effort food like kebabs. The menu offers charcoal-grilled lamb, chicken and fish, but they aren’t all that tasty or melting. The mezzes are just ok, but then again great hummus isn’t very hard to find. Puddings are of the sweet Turkish variety but they don’t add much to the meal. That’s the problem here - there are no standouts, no signature dishes and no good atmosphere to draw you in or back. The reason we all like Turkish food so much is that it consists of freshly assembled nicely spiced and seasoned ingredients - you don’t get that at Sedir.

The Drink
All you Lonely Planet types can order Turkish wines, otherwise the list is quite unremarkable. Stick to the Turkish beer, Efes.

The Last Word
Walk on further up Upper Street for a more authentic meal.
