Amongst the avenues of Brixton Village you’ll find hearty crêpes and galettes at Senzala, with sweet and savoury both delicious.

The Venue
Seating is either one of several small tables outside in the light and airy covered avenue or inside, where you can feel the heat of the kitchen and see the team work in close quarters. Changing artwork hangs inside amongst the mishmash of vinyl-top tables and odd, assorted chairs.

The Atmosphere
Far from being hipster heavy (which some may imagine of Brixton Village), Senzala, as with many other places here, is a mix of the obligatory Macbook toting trendies, a few families and retired couples. Some complain that this foodie pocket of Brixton will become removed from its community but the signs are that there is, and will continue to be, a good mix of Brixtonites.

The Food
Lack of choice isn’t something you struggle with at Senzala, with your first decision being whether to opt for a crêpe (white flour) or galette (buckwheat), and then whether to go sweet or savoury. With around 20 combinations of fresh savoury fillings and 14 on the sweet side it might be easier if the choice weren't so large.

Vegetarian options are plentiful, and include 'Just Cheese' (£4.10) or the eponymous 'Senzala' (stuffed with gorganzola, rocket, caramelised red onions and sundried tomato - £6.40). There is an array of options that draw inspiration from far and wide, from a full English breakfast to 'The Canadian' (with bacon and maple syrup) and everything in between.

The 'Picante' is recommended for those looking for a good whack of heat. Spiced beef, a blend of cheese, some jalapenos, onions, peppers and various herbs are generously packed into the galette (or crêpe). For those who want an even heftier kick, Senzala’s homemade hot sauce can be applied - it's a gorgeous, creamy mix of Brazilian chilli’s and other, very secret ingredients. You can also take a bottle away (£3.50).

The sweet options are more traditional, with a mix of chocolate, banana, strawberry and the odd spirit thrown in for good measure (from £4.50 to £6.50).

The Drink
Bottles of tap water are served up as you are seated, which, although a small point, is often something you have to ask for in larger concerns. Traditional Normandy cider, cocktails, beers and soft drinks are available.

The Last Word
Brazilian owners Claudia and Lee have created a business that has style, charm and substance. The hot sauce alone could be a business and once you’ve tried it you’ll be hankering after it every bit as much as you are the equally excellent crêpes and galettes.
