The ViewLondon Review
Big portions and celebrity clientele at this famous Fitzrovia Italian.
The Venue
This popular Italian is a regular for workers in the area. When the sun is shining, take advantage of the alfresco seating area at the front of the restaurant. Inside, be guided to your seat by a cheerful waiter, and enjoy some home cooking under the watchful eyes of celebrity photos. Sergios also has the bonus (for some!) of two plasma screens, showing Italian films during the day and live sport at night. The televisions are on mute, and background music plays at just the right volume. It is not hard to see why celebrities enjoy Sergios, its down to earth atmosphere combined with traditional honest grub makes it a great yet understated night out.
The Atmosphere
Sergios is lively and unpretentious and clientele chat and laugh constantly. Tables are placed close together, and waiters weave in and out, pen behind eye and note pad in hand. But this is not an uncomfortable set up, it all adds to the buzz of this quirky and fun restaurant.
The Food
Starters are humble and range from £4 - £7. Try the classic Parma ham and melon, or the antipasto platter, which are lifted straight out of an Italian village for about £7 each. Or cosy up with a bowl of hearty minestrone for a fiver. As well as the classic pizza and pasta around £9, a wide choice of fish and meat dishes are also available. Sogliola di dover (dover sole), is served with a selection of fresh vegetables, and at almost £20, is the most expensive dish on the menu. The fillet is cooked to perfection, lightly grilled in lemon butter, and the subtle citrus brings out the flavour of this delicate fish.
The Pollo Principesa is also a popular choice. A huge piece of succulent chicken breast is coated in crispy breadcrumbs, and lies beneath six fine asparagus stalks and subtle bechamel sauce. Like the fish, accompanying the chicken is a selection of vegetables, fried potatoes, green beans, creamy cauliflower cheese, and crunchy carrots keep this dish clean and uncomplicated. Mains range from £10 – £15. Desserts are predominantly gelati based, with the usual suspects including tartufo and tiramisu.
The Drink
As you’d expect from an Italian, Sergios boasts an extensive wine list drawing on many regions including Tuscany and the Piedmont and is not badly priced at all for this area at around £15 to £20. The house beer is your classic Italian Peroni although other bottles are also available and there is an extensive spirit selection. Particularly enjoyable is an aperitif of sweet dark Italian vermouth. Marvellous!
The Last Word
This is the perfect venue for a cheap and cheerful meal in the heart of Fitrovia. Traditional Italian food is simple and well executed. Segios is always busy, lunch time or evening so be sure to make a reservation.
