Fabulous! A truly gastronomic experience. Food was amazing (a la carte menu)... Wine recommended by the sommelier and truly complimented the entire meal. We are not usually dessert people, but couldn't resist the Bitter Chocolate Charlotte. The decor is interesting, but it works weirdly... A wonderful intimate and very romantic ambience. Cannot recommend more highly and we shall return!
Disappointing food made it vastly overpriced. This was supposed to be a pleasurable treat for two, trying a new restaurant with Michelin-star quality food. I walked away feeling deflated and utterly ripped off.
To begin with, I wasn't really drinking, but as it was a celebration, we opted for a half bottle of the house champagne. It smelled slightly corked from the off, and I asked the sommelier his opinion, as I wasn't entirely sure (having been off alcohol for some time prior to this). He insisted it was fine, and we accepted his view, however shortly afterward I regretted this decision, as essentially it wasn't right. At over £30 for a half bottle, it was an expensive mistake.
We plumped for the tasting menu, which appeared to offer an insight into all the best options on the a la carte. The first course of seared foie gras with gingerbread crisp and sweet and sour peaches was the only time throughout where I thought "this is interesting". After that, course by course was bland, uninventive and in a number of cases, poorly executed. The lobster tail had practically no jus at all, vegetables were consistently not seasoned whatsoever, and I was served lamb which was verging on under-cooked rather than rare (the fat side had hardly seen the pan, and was therefore raw). The final fish course preceding the lamb was something I am quite certain that, even with my amateur chef-ing skills, I could have reproduced quite easily; braised fennel with a seabass fillet topped with a sauce vierge. Is that really what one expects to receive in this kind of establishment? I'm all for simple, but I still expect a twist or a display of cooking prowess that says "and this is why you're eating here". It was nowhere to be seen.
The wine list is consciously omitting any more reasonable options, and thus a further half bottle of German white at £36 topped off the bill (service already added) to a stinging £235 for two. Not ok for what was delivered. Won't be returning.
