Dont come to Simply Thai! This is not Thai food!. I'm Thai and I am a chef in Earl's court. I know! The taste is awful and there are a lot of msg. You will feel very thirsty after the meal! The food was made from Thai curry finished. You can get this from Thai or chinese super market just put it in the pot add hot water put some veg. And meat then finished. This cost you less than 5 pounds. Dont be silly to eat here and feel it's good. There are many good Thai restaurant in london. The taste completely different! Better food, better atmospere. Please. If you care your healthy. Dont lose the money at Simply Thai. Finally, I found out that Gordon have no taste at all! I saw the way she cook while i'm wait the queue for wash room. Just look at the way she hold the knife and the ingredients. Omg! She dont know how to cook at all,,, this is not professional. I feel very sorry for the customer who came to Simply Thai because just saw her on tv. Very waste your time!
We were disappointed to discover the service was as bad as all the reviews described. The restaurant was full on the Sunday evening we visited and there was only 1 waitress serving, with the owner doing all the cooking.
The food took a very long time to arrive. When it did finally arrive it was some of the best Thai food I've eaten in London - but this wasn't enough to make up for the wait.
Simply Thai - please hire some more staff!
We won't be coming back despite the great food.
Read now before going to Simply Thai! - would give 0 stars if possible! I've never written a review before but the experience I had here felt warranted this review + to save other people from wasting their time. Now I've been wanting to go Simply Thai ever since it appeared in Gordon Ramsey's F word 2 years ago as one of the best Thai restaurants around. Instead, this is the worst restaurant I have ever, ever been to. Having being on tv for their 5 mins of fame has clearly gone completely to their heads! Firstly, in my one and only visit it was a treat for my birthday. When arriving the waitress rudely said we couldn't have the cake my brother had brought along to be put on the table or be eaten in the restaurant. Instead it had to be put on the floor (alarm bells starting to ring). Next, food was ok but the portion sizes tiny with extortionate prices and we had to wait 45 minutes for our mains with no sorry or free food to keep us happy while we waited - bad service rather than good seemed to be the norm in Simply Thai. Last of all, after ordering too much food we asked if they'd be able to put our leftovers in a container. Now, I've been to much posher restaurants all over London and never had a problem. Here, the waitress comes out with the cook (from the tv show) and rudely mutters that they haven't done takeaways for 2 years. Now what what that has to do with having food containers for customers I don't have a clue as they're not necessarily dependent on each other. Finally we left feeling severely disappointed and angry with the service. Not the way you'd want to spend the evening. So be warned
What a dis appointment! Having booked way in advance to get a table here our group were really looking forward to the evening. As per previous reviews the service was diabolical. 1) We had to ask for serviettes 2) there were cobwebs on the walls and worst of all 3) the food came very slowly and not at all together. By the time the last main dish had arrived the Pad Thai had been on the table at least 45 minutes with other dishes arriving throughout that period all going cold. When we advised of our disappointment the owner came and stared angrily at us without saying a word then walked off with out speaking. We left without paying the service charge.
Visited Simply Thai Restaurant on Saturday 30th October with high expectations . Unfortunately, the food was good but everything else was lacking. The owner comes across as very rude - we were not ready to order our meal when she came to our table - so she ignored us for the entire evening, a waiter finally took our order. It was extremey noisy and we had to shout at each other as there were 5 of us at a table. £4 for a 330mls bottle of beer was way over the top, which equates to about £8 a pint. As 10% service charge was added to the bill therefore we did not leave an additional tip. Found the evening to be more expensive than aticipated.
2 of the plates used for the starters were chipped.
Will not be repeating the experience. Would recommend that if you are looking for good Thai food resonablly priced with a good atmosphere - then go anywhere else
You have to wait for ages to get your food, the owner is horribly rude to both the customers and the poor serving staff and the food is not fantastic. My prawn stir fry dish had prawns that were still partly frozen in it! Avoid like the plague and go to the Thai on Teddington high street instead.
Had the most bizarre, awful restaurant experience of my life at this place. we'd eaten here before and loved the food, so had booked a table for two for my husband's 40th birthday. We turned up early and went in to ask if our table was ready but the waitress told us our booking had been cancelled. We were trying to find out why when the owner stormed over from the kitchen and started yelling at us. she said all bookings had to be confirmed on the day or they'd give our table away, and as we hadn't answered their phone call we'd lost our table. we were gobsmacked - she just laid into us, yelling that she lost loads of money from no-shows. there was no warning, no reasonable explaination offered, just full gale-force bellowing in the small, crowded restaurant. We tried to say no-one had explained this would happen when we made the booking a month earlier, and that no message had been left on our phone but every time we tried to say something back she just screamed louder and then stormed off back to the kitchen. I followed her and said we weren't being rude - just wanted to know how we were supposed to know all this and she yelled even louder. It was so weird, I was torn between being really angry at being screamed at in a crowded restaurant for no reason and a bit worried she was going to really lose it and start tearing her hair out. thank God she didn't have a knife in her hand.
After reading other reviews I'm so glad we didn't eat there. Not only for the crappy atmosphere (bet it was great that evening after we left), but it sounds like the food isn't so amazing any more either. we ended up celebrating my husband's 40th in another thai restaurant in teddington. They may not have been on telly but the waiter was lovely, the food was great and the other customers looked happy. I won't be going back to Simply Thai.
After reading the last few reviews I was starting to dread my visit last Saturday. I've been eating at this restaurant regularly since it opened but hadn't been for a while as the 'Ramsey-Effect' has made it so hard to get a table. It's never been a place for fast service, even when there are only one or two diners in there. That's never bothered me though - the house wine's good and cheap and with the right company the time flies by. As usual on Saturday the food was delicious. The little honey ribs for starters are the best I've ever tasted - I could eat those every night and not get bored, the flavours are a joy. All 5 of us loved our mains - the vegan of the group being especially delighted by how delicious her tofu dish was. Service was efficient except for one small moment of forgetfulness, certainly not the shambles that I'd been led to expect. A lovely evening, we'll most certainly be back.
So disappointing! All the previous reviews about service are spot on. We went for dinner last night and the service was dreadful, the ambiance totally chaotic with diners standing around our table waiting to be seated for at least half an hour after their tables were booked. It was over half an hour before we got a drink and even then it was after we'd asked 3 or 4 times. The waitress had tried to respond to our request but kept getting snapped at by the cook so she daren't leave the bar area to serve us! Even at this point we were discussing whether or not to throw the towel in and accept this was never going to be a great evening but we stuck with it and waited forever for our starters and mains as we'd booked a babysitter in order to go (which then cost us far more than anticipated because the meal had taken twice as long as we thought it would!) The sad thing is that the food, when it finally did reach us, was good but definitely not worth the whole experience. It was un-relaxing, frustrating and frankly altogether exhausting - everything a night out shouldn't be! We used to get take-aways on a regular basis before the restaurant found fame on the F-Word. You always had to wait a bit longer than expected when you went to pick them up but that's acceptable at take-away standard. You can't run a restaurant in this chaotic manner and the cook doesn't seem to care what kind of experience her diners are having. A nightmare - the F-word has ruined it completely - avoid it and avoid total disappointment!
Food was very good and in summary very good BUT - a minor niggle was the main course sea bass was cooKed well but the way it was served was a little strange with the skin wrapped over it - i guess to keep it moist - it was fiddly and tasted of sea bass not of the F word sauce which came with it which tasted of nothing - the rest of the food was VERY good. The key issues as per others reviews is that the Service was TERRIBLE and non existent for time to time... we were told to arrive at 6pm and vacant before 8pm - we were fine with that - but on the night we'd not recieved our main course until 7.25pm!!! - we'd been left with huge time gaps between meals - we ended up having 3 rounds of drinks which pushed the bill close to 120 pds for 2 adults and a child with starter, main, 3 small beers and 3 wines - not exactly cheap! I it spoilt the evening for us.
The staff never visited our table to see if we were ok during these long waits either...multiple people were turned away and the restaurant is packed! The food is excellent - the layout of the restuarant - really shoddy cheap noisy (on stone floors ) wooden seats - cobwebs!!! above us on the front windows and general appauling service REALLY let it down - we will go back probably mid week for the food - but the ambiance, service etc - all things I believe GR picked up on his shown are rated by us 2/10 I'm afraid - simple things that will keep the hard work in the cooking and excellence there of - ever reaching overall greatness for the restaurant - all in all very frustrating as simple to fix and not expensive to wipe a few cobwebs away !! A real pity.
I went to Simply Thai last night after seeing it on the F word. I had heard the bad reviews on service but had decided to ignore them hoping the food was worth it.I'm not sure where to begin, expect to wait over an hour for your starter, when you do receive your starter, it all arrives at different times. When we had waited over 50 mins for our main, out of pure desperation, we dared to ask how long our main would be, the owner came out the kitchen and stood over us shouting, saying that we were lying about how long we were waiting for. It was embarrassing for all involved. At that point I was ready to walk out.
When our meals arrived they were ok, I was so hungry by this point I would have eaten anything. Service was added, bill was £112 for four people, only two beers. The restaurant was over-filled and freezing cold!!!! Im not usually one to write a review but had to warn people not to waste their time. DO NOT GO TO SIMPLY THAI!!!!!
We have been coming to this restaurant for 3 or 4 years. We would just turn up and there was always a table because it was always very quiet. The service was slow and the owner was often off-hand, but we would put up with this because the food was outstanding. Since the F Word, you have to book, so we booked a table for 5 last week. It was absolutely chaotic from the moment we arrived. The place was full (she has put in extra tables) so everyone is squashed together and it was very noisy. The owner still does all of the cooking herself with no chefs helping her and so consequently there are extremely long waits for the food. We waited an hour and a quarter for our starter and another hour for our main (we'd lost the will to live by then). The people at the next table had arrived at 7.30 and had their main course at 9.30. There were 3 or 4 waitresses who were very pleasant but didn't seem to know what was going on. The owner has also put up the prices and the portions seem to be smaller than they used to be. There was a continuous parade of people coming through the door (leaving it open and letting all the cold air in) asking if they could have a table (they couldn't as it was fully booked). All in all it was not a pleasant experience. I felt quite exhausted by the end of the evening. We won't be going back there until she sorts out her staffing and organisational problems.
Recently heard a lot of praise for this local restaurant.
Went last night, thought the food was good. The bill was £70 for two, no alcohol. Had the location been smart and central they could get away with it, but abysmal yet friendly service, surly owner and far too long a wait for food will not have me returning...
I rarely feel the need to share a review, but Simply Thai really is a bomb. How did it get such accolades? When we arrived to the owner and a glare I should have known better. Despite arriving at opening (5:30) the set menu took over 2 hours, 45 minutes just waiting for starters. The food was very medicore and really a let down. The way the owner treated patrons was absurd- she told off one poor woman for taking her booking from 5 to 2, and overall the service was spotty. Only could tv take a so-so restaurant and pack in the people- all for what? After this I have no idea. Avoid it.
This is used to be my favorite Thai Restaurant and Takeaway. I was able happily to ignore the sometimes rude behaviour due to the quality of the food. Since the F Word has arrived it has changed dramatically , the food is still good but that's about it. The prices have gone up, service charge gets added automatically. When you arrive the staff is not allowed to allocate you with a table. She does that all by herself after she has checked if you are good enough for her now posh restaurant.
The whole F Word experience has gone completely to the owner's head and has pretty much ruined the once fab "local restaurant". If she does not get some outside help then I can see Simply Thai disappearing fast. Thank you Gordon!
Just returned from eating at Simply Thai as a result of The F word. So very disappointed! We asked for a meat dish to be supplemented with tofu, very simple... this was not an option! Greasy noodles, curry far far too sweet and one tasteless dish! The service was slow, waiting 1hr between courses. This was a below average experience in every way, therefore I would not recommend at all.
Went here with a group of friends for my boyfriends birthday after seeing the restaurant on The F Word and I have to say was very disappointed with experience we had.
We took along a birthday cake as a surprise to celebrate which I handed to one of the waitresses on the way in, then half an hour later the owner stormed out into the restaurant waving the cake around in the air asking whose cake it was and demanding that we must order deserts or pay a charge on serving the cake. Totally ruining the surprise and the whole experience!
Food took a very long time and did not arrive all together, also had to wait a very long time for the bill.
Ticked the box but will not be returning!
We too went to this restaurant after seeing it on the F word to celebrate a friends birthday, never again!
The restaurant was freezing, I had to keep my coat on the entire time, whilst my friend ate her dinner with her gloves on!
Service was very slow from an incompetent waitress. When the food finally arrived it was edible but nothing to how it has been described in the show-was not impressed!
When we asked for the bill - another long wait for it to arrive, by this time we were all frozen so my friend went to ask for the bill to be told that we would just have to wait 2 minutes! The bill arrived and when my friends went to pay (very expensive for what we received) and explain that we were not paying the 10%, which had already been added, they were shouted at by the owner of the restaurant and told "what do you expect when you ordered Pad Thai, that is not my speciality and if you wanted that you should have gone to another thai restaurant!"
In the time we were there three other tables walked out due to the slow service and the temperature - I would definitely not recommend this restaurant to anyone. The only reason I have given it one star is because you can't give none!
"ah! What a shame." is what I thought as I walked otut of Simply Thai. Thai is by far my fav cuisine and I have been to Thailand and experienced their food out there too. I only live down the road from Simply Thai and like many others saw it on the f-word. The food is good, very nice although I did find the Curry's too sickly, too much sugar added I think. The service is absolute bullshit though, not surprised to see comments on this.
Expect to wait at least 45mins for your meal, after starters! And when I asked for the service charge to come off, she shouted at me! Haha. Ok, that was quite amusing actually. Totally overrated, go there and see for your self. Fatboys in Richmond is way better and cheaper. This is not authentic Thai, the only place you'll find that, is in a thai person's house!
I took my mother in law there for her birthday on the back of seeing it on the F Word. We live in South London and made the effort to go there looking forward to tasting dishes cooked on the TV program. The food was tasty but it took 45 minutes for starters to arrive. Mains came out 1 hour and 10 minutes later. The portions were tiny. We paid £12.95 per main to end up having half a snapper in one dish and 5 small pieces of monk fish in another. Both rice and rice noodle portions were very small compared with other Thai restaurants. The meal came to nearly £90GBP without drinks other than tea.
I spoke with the owner and she blanked me suggesting I would pay 3 times more in a Michelin Star restaurant in London despite not having any Michelin Stars to her name. She put her prices up since the show which are now reflected in her current restaurant menu. NB. The prices on her website still reflected the old prices. We would like to highlight that front of house staff are courteous, helpful and well mannered and presented. They appear fearful of the rather Stalinist attitude of the owner!!!!!
This is some of the best food I know of outside my own home and my mum's. I love this restaurant.
The owner is a lovely lady who is a bit of a control freak and bossy to her staff and customers but she is an amazing chef and perfectionist.
Don't go here for the ambience or even the service but go the flavours which are amazing.
Personally I would recommend take-away as you can get all the benefit of the food and eat it in the surroundings of your choice.
Went here on the back of some good reviews but those should have been really lucky. Extremely slow service along with attitudinal problems with asian customers (that is a bit weird being a Thai restaurant). Portions were small and pricey too. One of the worst dining experiences I have had in London.
I was really impressed with Simply Thai. The ethos is impressive too - using simple flavours to create really very good dishes. The decor is suited too, with a minmalist approach which really works and allows you to concentrate fully on the food.
The service was efficient as opposed to good but it was a busy night so perhaps they were just too overwhelmed. They also say that a busy restaurant is a good sign so Simply Thai must be doing quite a lot right!
