The ViewLondon Review
A refreshingly local celebrity hangout with a relaxed family atmosphere. The VenueThere aren't many posher places to hang out than Belsize Park, but Steele's is conveniently close to Chalk Farm tube for day trippers who can't afford a million pound mortgage.
The Sir Richard Steele is situated on Haverstock Hill, the main road leading into Belsize Park but don't let that put you off, as once you're inside you'll feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of London.
The AtmospherePop in for a daytime drink and you'll find a cosy, reassuringly clutter-filled pub including plenty of drunken locals. A favourite haunt of London's A-List celebrities, especially tabloid favourite's, the Primrose Hill set, it's not uncommon to find Sadie Frost or Kate Moss supping a drink in the corner.
By nightfall the pub transforms, and not always for the best. Many of the evening punters appear to be a mixture of party hard locals and eager autograph hunters, desperate to catch a glimpse of their favourite star. As a result, the atmosphere, especially on a Friday and Saturday, can sometimes be a little highly charged.
The FoodA recently introduced Thai menu is a popular choice and the portions are sizeable for the cheap prices. A plate of Steele's Pad Thai is enough to satisfy the biggest appetite, and the prawn crackers are truly delicious. There are more than enough tables and chairs to sit down and enjoy a meal in the main bar whilst the large beer garden and back room (complete with quite disturbing pictures of religious scenes that wouldn't look out of place in a horror film) provide somewhere a little quieter to chat and enjoy the food.
The DrinkDon't expect to find a CAMRA award-winning pub here, although Steele's does have a few real ales (APA, Abbotts, Pride), to please the enthusiasts. There is also a decent selection of wines and spirits, which range in price from cheap and cheerful to impress a first date.
The Last WordFor a lazy daytime drink and a flick through the weekend's papers, you can't beat the Sir Richard Steele but pick your nights carefully and avoid the party loving weekend crew unless if you're after an all night on the tiles.
