The ViewLondon Review
This tapas bar and restaurant serves up classic and authentic Spanish dishes in the heart of West Hampstead.
The Venue
Sirous benefits from the adjoining pavement which acts as a pretty al fresco area in the summer months. The interior is contemporary and uses lots of dark woods to create a cosy environment. On the one side are robust wooden tables and on the other plush red leather sofas where diners can rest their weary legs. This is a good feature for people who want to dine Romanesque style.
The Atmosphere
Sirous has fast become a local favourite amongst West Hampstead folk. The trendy, young set mix together over a jug of sangria… or two.
The Food
The restaurant offers up a tasty brunch menu, which they serve until 4 in the afternoon. This includes poached and scrambled eggs on toast and a decent vegetarian breakfast featuring some crisply fried sweet corn fritters. There is a good range of tapas dishes on offer, and at certain times Sirous offers two dishes for under £8.00 which is a steal.
The spicy chicken wings in tomato sauce are rich and tender, whilst the meatballs in a tomato and chilli sauce is both sweet and provides the right amount of kick. Try also the oven baked okra in tomato and garlic sauce which is soft and full of flavour, unusual considering that okra as a vegetable usually lacks in personality. The grilled halloumi, a Cypriot salty cheese, served with mixed salad and tzatziki will dance on your palate.
The traditional tortilla Espanola, potato and spring onion omelette is generous and the texture of the omelette with the spring onion gives this dish an additional bite. One of the chef’s specials worth tasting is the Sirous Paella, with a choice of chicken, chorizo, seafood or vegetarian. Simple desserts feature an intensely flavoured banana rum, made up of bananas cooked in butter, honey and rum. The bananas take on a lovely caramalised texture thanks to the honey.
The Drink
No tapas place should be without authentic jugs of sangria and Sirous doesn’t disappoint, with jugs of both red or white sangria. There are also draught and bottled beers available including Red Stripe, Kirin Ichiban, Smirnoff Ice and Magners Irish cider. On the wine front, good choices include a dry and buttery Spanish chardonnay or a Fortius Reserva from the Navarra region which is rich and has a vanilla-like scent.
The Last Word
This is a nice spot to come on the weekend and a perfect pick me up for all those late Saturday nights.
