The ViewLondon Review
Part of a small chain of Turkish restaurants, Sofra is equally suitable as a lunchtime stop-off for Saturday shoppers or for an informal, mid-week dinner with friends. The VenueAlthough St Christopher’s Place is within easy walking distance of both Oxford Circus and Bond Street the pace is much less frantic than that of neighbouring Oxford Street. With it’s pedestrianised streets and outdoor seating, when the sun is shining St Christopher’s Place has a distinctly continental feel. Sofra as a venue itself is not particularly inspiring with plain walls, white tablecloths and a wooden floor. Despite the large windows the narrow room has a slightly dingy feel but don’t let this put you off. If the weather is fine try to get a table outside, there are patio heaters for when the night gets cooler and it feels much less cramped than the rather crowded interior.
The AtmosphereSofra has a relaxed and convivial feel which is not for those who are in a hurry. Service is friendly but on the slow side but this all adds to the Mediterranean vibe. The food at Sofra is ideal for sharing which makes this a good venue for groups of friends although you may find yourself shoulder to shoulder with your fellow diners.
The FoodIn the spirit of lingering over your order Sofra offer complimentary queen olives in garlic with a very fresh tasting humus and crusty bread. For those looking for a substantial meal there is a wide range of choices from both the grill and the seafood menus. Prices start at around £10 and range up to about £20 for the prime fillet steak. However, if you are after value for money you can’t beat the hot and cold meze dishes which can be mixed with the starters at £4 to £5 a dish. Six to eight dishes should be more than sufficient for two diners and allow for plenty of variety. The dishes are simple but use good quality fresh ingredients and come in decent sized portions. In particular the tangy tabbouleh, juicy stuffed vine leaves and crispy borek parcels all come highly recommended.
The DrinkThe wine list is not extensive and prices are slightly higher than you might expect given the good value of the food. However, the Turkish house red is very drinkable and makes an excellent accompaniment to the meze dishes. At about £12 a bottle it wont break the bank either.
The Last WordGreat value, laid back Turkish dining in an oasis of calm just off Oxford Street.
