The ViewLondon Review
Relaxed Japanese restaurant for the after work crowd.
The Venue
Located in a side street in Fitzrovia, Soho Japan is spacious and refined, with wooden panelling, cabinets full of wine, and vintage-style posters along the walls. This all gives it a European feel, rather than the simplicity that you expect with most Japanese restaurants.
The Atmosphere
Soho Japan is light and laid back, sporting a typical after work crowd. It’s also popular with a Japanese crowd, which is always a good sign that the food is authentic. The staff are friendly and efficient.
The Food
The menu consists of typical Japanese dishes, such as a variety of sushi dishes (from £14 to £22.50) to sashimi plates (ranging from £8 to £30), rice and noodle dishes. There are also a range of side dishes to choose from and a pick and mix sushi option; the cheapest piece being £3.80 and £6 for the most expensive. Option A of the three assorted sushi options consists of eight different nigiri pieces and one roll. The portion was large with a generous amount of lovely fresh fish fully covering each finger of rice.
Before the meal you’re given a tiny complimentary ceramic bowl of bean sprouts in something resembling a creamy mushroom sauce, which might raise a few eyebrows but once you try it it’s actually quite nice. Interesting flavours ice cream include the traditional green tea and red bean along with English coffee and tea.
The Drink
There is a large wine list and a smaller choice of beer, including drafts at £4.20, as well as more traditional Japanese beverages such as sake (between £13 to £30 for a bottle), shochu (a clear distilled spirit), chuhai (shochu combined with an option of mixers) and Japanese cocktails, as well as soft drinks. After the meal you’re served complimentary green tea.
The Last Word
Tasty food and generous portions combined with a relaxed atmosphere makes Soho Japan a great place to dine out.
