The ViewLondon Review
Tucked away in the financial hub of Canary Wharf, Sri Nam offers a host of oriental dishes devised by celebrity chef, Ken Hom. Although the location lends itself to a high presence of suits, the atmosphere is relaxed and not what you’d expect from upmarket Cabot Square. The VenueSri Nam is located centrally in Canary Wharf, boasting the Credit Suisse building as one of its neighbours. Be warned, it is easy to get lost in the maze of the complicated streets of the Wharf, but when you find Sri Nam, it’s like an oriental oasis in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the financial district.
The oriental feel hits you as soon as you walk in and come face-to-face with a large Buddha. Downstairs is a laid back bar with a buzzing post-5.30pm atmosphere. Upstairs, the dining room is well spaced out and not sardined into place like with some oriental restaurants. The tables are beautifully laid and sparkling lights hang around the edge of the restaurant. There are also tables available in a secluded area with dark walls and random but attractive feathered angel wings.
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere is buzzy and the service is efficient. Although no music plays in the background, the hum of the restaurant is atmosphere enough. However, the upstairs restaurant does overhang the bar below, so Friday nights can be hampered by the noise below as investment bankers celebrate the start of their weekend.
The FoodAs to be expected, a venue in Canary Wharf charges Canary Wharf prices. However, the food is good quality. Starters include everything from dim sum to spring rolls. The main courses vary in value and include everything from salads to curry and noodle dishes. There are also set menus that are reasonably priced and they offer a wide range of choices. Sri Nam does offer a nice range of dishes but vegetarians beware. As expected from an oriental restaurant the options are limited, especially on the set menus.
The DrinkIn addition to the downstairs bar there is also a bar in the dining area. There are a nice selection of wines and beers, including specialty beers if you want something a bit different. There is also an array of delicious cocktails to choose from that are beautifully presented in large glasses with eye-catching garnishes. For after your meal, coffees and authentic Chinese teas are on offer – including a tea to aid digestion.
The Last WordSri Nam lives up to expectation. The service is top-class, the food good quality and the atmosphere is buzzy and great for an after-work meal, whether for business or pleasure. Just be sure that you’ve been to the cashpoint beforehand as the prices are a little steep and it soon adds up – especially if you’ve not gone for the set menu option.
