The ViewLondon Review
An open fronted Borough cafe, serving gourmet bangers-in-a-bun.
The Venue
Stoney Street Cafe, on the edge of Borough Market, is an open fronted cafe, with rough white walls, higgledy piggledy tables and chairs, and a row of stainless steel fridges. Sky News is projected onto the back wall – as are big events like the boat race or a cup final. The entrance to the cafe is adorned with two upright grills with rows of glistening sausages and a table with pickles, mustard and tomato sauce.
The Atmosphere
This cafe is buzzing on market day, trendy foodies perch next to locals all enjoying the star of the show – the gorgeous sausages. It can get a bit cold on dank days as the whole front of the shop is open but bring a hat and scarf and enjoy the hustle and bustle of London's finest food market. Some evenings, the cafe hosts open mic nights and poetry readings.
The Food
Lovingly made from good quality pork, lamb and venison, the short, plump bangers are top notch and straight from the market. The Stoney Street crew rush between wiping tables, filling coffee cups and ringing up the cash register, while the sausages sizzle. They have been known to stuff rosemary or sage into the bottom of the grills to infuse the chubby sausages with smoky herby flavours. For a very reasonable £3 you get two or three of these kings of sausages stuffed into a crusty panino. You can eat wandering around the market, leaning against the wall outside, or on one of the wonky wooden tables inside.
The Drink
Tea and coffee in paper cups as well as a selection of soft drinks. That's it.
The Last Word
Succulent sausages, served in a thriving market cafe.
