The ViewLondon Review
Occupying a highly desirable location in London’s iconic Oxo Tower Wharf, Tamesa at Oxo is well placed to draw in the South Bank tourist crowd but remains popular with native Londoners. The VenueSituated a few floors below the prestigious Oxo Tower Restaurant, diners at Tamesa are able to enjoy the same unrivalled riverside views. Wisely Tamesa at Oxo have decided to keep it simple when it comes to the decor allowing the South Bank backdrop to speak for itself.
Although the red rubber chairs give the place something of a school canteen feel, the furnishings are modern and bright and contrast beautifully with the old world charm of St Paul’s cathedral. Wooden floors and white walls, with a splash of aqua to the rear, create a light and airy interior that sits well with the Thameside location.
The AtmosphereEarly in the evening the large restaurant space is relatively empty. However, a clever acoustical trick gives the illusion of a much fuller restaurant which allows diners to relax and chat with ease. As the evening progresses, the restaurant fills up to a more comfortable level although it may still be possible to get a table without a reservation. Tamesa at Oxo isn't pretentious in any way and offers a relaxed atmosphere which is intimate without being oppressive.
The FoodOnce again simplicity is at the heart of the restaurant's offering which includes European and Asian influenced cuisine. The selection of starters includes dishes such as a hot and sour coconut soup and fresh asparagus served with hollandaise. The main course menu is short but comprehensive encompassing pasta, fish and meat dishes. Dishes such as Asian fish are well prepared although the selection of side dishes can be a little disappointing. There should also be something on the dessert menu to tempt most palates. Overall the food is tasty and reasonably priced although by no means the main draw.
The DrinkThe wine list is comprehensive with fifteen varieties of wine served by the glass. The circular bar also serves up a range of martinis and champagne cocktails at reasonable prices including the Lotus Petal, an exotic combination of pear, guava and passion fruit. Drinks can be enjoyed on the designer chairs near the entrance making the bar at Tamesa an ideal early evening South Bank stop off.
The Last WordTamesa at Oxo offers stunning skyline views without the sky high prices.
