The ViewLondon Review
Located on Haverstock Hill, this tapas paradise is the perfect spot for a relaxed dinner with friends. It will please homesick Spanish natives and English aficionados longing for fiesta.
The Venue
If you are looking for the typical tablao experience, with the picturesque Andalusian decor and the flamenco dancer, you might be disappointed but if you’re looking for a real Spanish experience, Tapeo will not fail to seduce you. The decor is simple but subtly Mediterranean. The wooden tables and chairs, red candles and display of wine bottles make you feel instantly at home. In turn, the reproduction of Picasso’s Guernica and the guitar hanging on the walls assert the Spanish soul of this place.
The Atmosphere
Tapeo features a warm, lively atmosphere, with a crowd made up of Spanish natives and English aficionados alike. You might be disappointed at the lack of Spanish music but the service is good and the staff are very welcoming.
The Food
Tapeo is probably the first tapas bar in the history of Spanish cuisine featuring such a huge choice for vegetarians. There is a great variety of salads (£4 - £6) and a comprehensive list of fish, seafood and meat, all at a very reasonable price (£5 - £8). And of course, there’s also the traditional paella for two, which takes about 20 minutes to prepare. Portions are small, so feel free to order at least two dishes per person. Presented in a small ceramic plate, the grilled cod is definitely a good choice, tender and light and complemented by a basic tomato sauce. For dessert, the crema catalana lives up to its classic reputation and is ideal for those with a sweet tooth.
The Drink
Wine lovers will be delighted to find such a variety of Spanish wines, priced from £8.95 for a bottle of house wine up to £32.50. The Bordon is an elegant and well-balanced red wine whislt the Sangre de Toro, made with Garnacha and Carinena grapes has a rich, Mediterranean aroma and is good value at £13.95 for half a bottle. Beers are £3.50 and a variety of sangria is available from £12.95.
The Last Word
A very affordable restaurant in a peaceful location, Tapeo has that special something to make it stand out from other Spanish restaurants.
