The ViewLondon Review
This chic cafe overlooks the river Thames and offers much needed respite from the vast array of art exhibited throughout the gallery.
The Venue
Located on level two in the Tate Modern, this light and spacious cafe offers a nice, contemporary environment where you can enjoy a unique menu and wide range of drinks, including smoothies, fruit juices, tea, wine and coffee.
Clean white walls, high ceilings lit with strip lights and gleaming black tables with matching chairs ensure that this cafe doesn’t look out of place in the gallery. In fact, it’s quite the opposite – it fits in perfectly with the contemporary design yet respects the building’s industrial roots.
The Atmosphere
Spacious and bright, with a friendly ambience - you don’t have to visit the gallery to enjoy the Tate Modern Cafe 2. It is also a great place to tuck into a light meal after walking along the Thames – and for those just popping in for a coffee, be sure to enjoy the views from the terrace which overlooks the Thames and offer a superb photo opportunity.
The Food
The menu here is inventive with options such as dandelion, beetroot and ox tongue salad, as well as mezze plates and basics such as egg mayonnaise and watercress on sourdough bread. The spinach, hummus, red pepper and carrot wrap is a great tasty vegetarian option - the sweet crunchy carrot and peppers complement the subtle garlicky hummus perfectly. Those with a sweet tooth can opt for the peach and cherry crumble with vanilla ice-cream – a lovely combo of sweet and slightly sour fruit topped with light and buttery crumble and finally finished with smooth, creamy ice cream.
The Drink
Coffee here is good – strong and flavoursome, just as the Italians like it. There is also a wide range of fruit and traditional teas, delicious healthy smoothies and bottled beers and wine. If you are feeling decadent, opt for the Monbana hot chocolate with marshmallows and whipped cream – lush.
The Last Word
After a day of culture, visit the Tate Modern Cafe 2. With its impressive views, unique menu and variety of drinks this is the ultimate modern venue for the modern art and restaurant lover.
