Fabulous starters, the Lamb shops are an absolute must. The mains are average for a very good place. THe value is incredible though and by far the best restaurant for the area. The atmosphere ranges from buzzing to stressful though. Don't go here on a date or if you want a quiet meal! Unfortunately it is frequented by drunken city guys who think they own the place but reassuringly lots of families go as well.
I agree with others on the high quality of grilled stuff served in New Tayyabs, like seekh kebabs, chicken tikka and lamb chops. However, curries are just average and nothing to talk about. My biggest issue was with their charging us for poppadums which we didn't even order! I went with a friend and as soon as we had taken our seats, the waiter hurriedly put a plate of poppadums, some chutneys and a plate of salad on our table.
Since everyone was being served this, we thought this was on the house. But when the bill arrived, we realised that we had been charged 50p for each poppadum, half of which we hadn't even eaten! Obviously this was annoying and I told the waiter that we hadn't ordered any poppadums. He didn't reply and I saw him talk to another guy, perhaps the manager. Anyway, no one came to talk to us about it and we didn't take up the matter further.
However, it left a bad taste in the mouth. I'm surprised to see that this thing isn't mentioned in any other review. Quite possible it didn't annoy others as much, but I thought it was very unfair and unethical of New Tayyabs.
Went to Tayyabs on Tuesday 24th of April and the food was great. Very cheap and well served. Wonderful.
I have lived just off Brick Lane for the past four years and although I may not have tried every single venue, I've tried plenty and I've found nothing that even gets close to New Tayyabs. In particular I'd highlight the New Tayyabs food (superb) and the value for money (bonus!). Can't say fairer than that, can you?
New Tayyabs? Best curry? As someone who has eaten curries since for over 30 years, I can say that this place was good, but not special. And I am talking about the food alone. Not the service which was good and friendly, the atmosphere which was buzzing, but packed, or decor.
There are plenty of Brick Lane curry places as good in terms of pure taste. So don't believe the hype about New Tayyabs. Certainly don't queue up for it.
New Tayyab is simply the best curry house in London. The lamb chops are the stuff of dreams. Well worth the queues, and so so cheap.
Definitely recommend booking at New Tayyabs as this place is so popular and busy. We went on a Tuesday and luckily booked beforehand. New Tayyabs do good quality food at a very reasonable price. The food was authentic but not too oily.
I enjoyed the whole experience. If you're not desperate for alcohol, try the mango lassi, it was great. Else remember to bring your own. The service was good, if not a little too fast, but I felt comfortable. I'll definitely be going back again.
What an amazing find New Tayyab is.
The long queues despite the out of the way location acts as a good indication of the quality of this place. Don't be put off by the queue as it moves pretty quickly.
Once seated at your table in this modern canteen-like dining area you will find the waiters to be very quick and attentive. The menu at New Tayyab may perplex fans of the more conventional English version of a curry house as several of the standard dishes you encounter in other Indian, Pakistani or Bangladeshi restaurants are absent and some new culinary choices lie in wait for you.
The dry meat is fantastic, not at all dry but rather very tender and with a marvellous spicy heat which gradually accumulates with each mouthful. The Aloo Meat as the name suggests is a meat and potato dish that comes in a subtle but gorgeous sauce with a generous helping of tender meat and some particularly mouthwatering potato pieces. Rice was very nice, naan breads were presentable if not the best I've ever had, starters were all good and the Mutton Tikka was cooked to perfection and very flavoursome. The meat samosas were not only dirt-cheap but were packed with meaty filling and had a definite kick to them.
Remember New Tayyab does not serve alcohol but allows you to bring your own, so stock up before setting off as the nearest off-licence is a fair old walk from the restaurant.
The best part of the evening was when the waiter brought us the unbelievably low bill for the meal. A party of three of us ate for less than £29! All in all, the only curry restaurant you will ever need. Worth waiting in line for, as once seated we were in and out in less than 45 minutes (without feeling unduly rushed), full to the brim with great food and barely out of pocket for the privilege.
