The ViewLondon Review
Ten Ten Tei is an authentic Japanese-style restaurant that serves up some of the best sushi in London. The VenueBased in the heart of Soho on Brewer Street, Ten Ten Tei’s location benefits from many funky bars and clubs in the locality. A sister restaurant of the well known Kulu Kulu Sushi, Ten Ten Tei is only a heartbeat away from Piccadilly tube station. Inside is a narrow two floor restaurant that feels like a back lane noodle bar, with its plain wooden tables ready-loaded with napkins, chopsticks, toothpicks, pepper pots, soy and tonkatsu sauce. Tables are very close together but this only adds to the atmosphere. The decor is simple, with an additional touch of two oversized Japanese paintings which direct you to the bathrooms – one painting for the guys and one for the girls.
The AtmosphereThis place is mostly packed with Japanese locals, students and businessmen which is always a good sign of a popular Japanese establishment. Londoners know about Ten Ten Tei’s reputation for great sushi. Savour the busy chat of the neighbouring tables while the owner and Japanese staff work efficiently to tend to your every need.
The FoodA wide selection of affordable sushi is available with prices under £3.00 per portion, including a combination of glistening pieces of salmon, tuna, mackerel, salmon roe and prawn, as well as more unusual fish such as turbot, red snapper, cuttlefish and scallop. The crisp-skinned grilled mackerel is a treat. Also try the chewy salt-grilled squid legs and hiyayakko, which is refreshing, chilled bean curd with bonito flakes. The California roll and mackerel are very fresh and the nigiri is outstanding. The sticky rice is constructed not too tightly, which gives it a lovely soft texture.
Try the unadon, grilled eel with kabayaki sauce or the nabeyaki udon, noodles served with egg, prawn, tempura, chicken, seaweed and vegetables in a delicious broth. You can certainly taste all the flavours that have gone into this dish through the delicious noodles.
The DrinkTraditional Japanese beers are both crisp and refreshing. Choose from a selection of tea infusions including green, peppermint and chamomile tea. If you’re struggling with the wine list the staff is on hand to help.
The Last WordCheap and cheerful, Ten Ten Tei is a great authentic outlet for well made sushi at a streetwise price.
