Thai Orchid is a good restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere. It’s reasonably priced and you can have a decent meal for around £8 to £9, though the bill should come to just under £20 per person for the full works.

The Venue
It is located on Clapham’s bustling high street, halfway between Clapham North and Clapham Common tube stations. The decor of the restaurant is simple and modern, with dim lighting and tea lights giving it a relaxed atmosphere. The rear of the restaurant however, is a little shabby, as it hasn’t been renovated in line with the front of the venue.

The Atmosphere
The clientele is a mix of couples and groups of friends from the local area. Service is good but not great, but once your order has been taken drinks arrive swiftly and food follows soon afterwards. It’s no five star restaurant, but it will satisfy those looking for a pleasant meal in Clapham.

The Food
The range of starters is typical of a Thai restaurant and includes grilled satay chicken, prawn toast served with red plum sauce and chicken and prawn dumplings served with soy sauce (all under £4). Their mixed starter (£13) is a good choice for two or more people as it provides a mix of Thai bites. Main courses include Thai favourites such as Pad Thai and green and red curries. Their roast duck cooked in red curry sauce with coconut milk, tomatoes and basil includes a good amount of meat, isn’t overly hot and the coconut milk gives it a creamy texture – all in all it’s a pretty satisfying meal. The Kai Yang however, chicken marinated in honey and spices, is a dry and unimpressive dish and the chicken isn’t of a particularly good quality. The coconut rice is light and fluffy and comes in a good sized portion to complement the main meal.

The Drink
The drink is well priced with house wine starting at £10.95 a bottle, pretty much what you’d expect for the price. Beer is £2.50 for a bottle of Kingfisher and £3 for Singh or Tiger. Soft drinks are around £2.

The Last Word
Thai Orchid is a good place to go for a satisfying meal in a relaxed atmosphere when in Clapham.
