The ViewLondon Review
Down a narrow and unexciting side street lies Thai Square, hidden amongst the hustle and bustle of the city. Thai Square Mansion House provides upscale and healthy cuisine at affordable prices.
The Venue
As you walk through the huge wooden doors you leave the worries of the outside world behind you and enter an aesthetically pleasing, zen-like setting. Light wood tables and chairs, pale walls and dim lighting, along with authentic festive statues and wall hangings all help to set the mood.
The Atmosphere
Thai Square can cater for all types of scenarios. Take a date there, have a work dinner there or celebrate with a group of friends. Staff are friendly, knowledgeable and inviting.
The Food
You might have a tough time deciding what to order with the extensive selection of items and menus. There are several set menus along with their regular a la carte menu, with plenty of choices for vegetarians. The mixed veggie starter (£5.50) is lightly fried, fresh, and crunchy tempura vegetables and thick fried tofu slices with dipping sauces on the side. Though these items are fried, they’re not too greasy or overly filling and everything is enough for two to share.
Tofu Pad Thai (£7.95) is served in a generous portion with a decorative net made of fried egg over the top of the dish. It’s a hearty and satisfying main course, though the egg seems to over power the peanut flavour. Pad seiyu (£7.50) combines stir fried thick rice noodles with chicken, vegetables and egg. The sauce on this dish is light with just the right amount of salt and blends well with the green vegetables and tender pieces of chicken.
The Drink
The bar is quite impressive as well. You can choose from an extensive wine list including whites, reds, roses, dessert wines and Champagne and sparkling wines. The San Rafael Merlot (£14.50) is bold yet light at the same time and doesn’t compete with the flavours of the food. If you are in the mood for something with a little more bite, there are many cocktails to choose from also such as the Fruit Salad, Green Bull, or Ping Ping.
The Last Word
For a value packed and health conscious meal, plan your next trip to Thailand, which happens to be in the City of London. Thai Square has elegance, excellent food and wonderful service.
