Great food, great atmosphere.
The decor is as good as the food, TOM YOM soup a must.
Highly recommend it.
Went for a birthday not long ago. Food was great and so was service, especially good value with the 50% toptable offer. Will be going back again!
We had an office lunch for 7 at Thai Thai today booked through Top Table. As we had the ‘50% off food’ offer we were not allowed to use the set lunch menu and all 7 of us had to order a starter and a main course from the a la carte menu. Unfortunately it took over an hour for our main course to arrive by which time one of us had to leave without eating. We had repeatedly asked for water and the waitress was ‘not allowed’ to leave the water jug on the table. They were clearly understaffed and really shouldn’t have accepted our booking. Overall we spent 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete our lunch. This is acceptable for a leisurely dinner but not for a meal in your lunch break.
We also learned that Top Table charges the restaurant £2 per head per booking which is why we weren’t permitted to opt out of the offer. All these restrictions really spoilt what was meant to be a nice welcome lunch for our new team member.
The food was good though overprized and obviously set up to draw people in through special offers via third parties (top table etc). I have had equally good Thai food elsewhere for half the price. The Pad Thai I found below average with an underlying taste of old frying oil. But the curries were excellent.
The service charge raised another issue. When I had eaten there before I was told that the management took 50% of the service charge, which is pretty outrageous if you believe that a tip should go to the person who served you. Today we were told that the staff only get 20% of the service charge, which makes me wonder whether they get any at all. Some people feel uncomfortable not leaving a tip but you shouldn’t unless you are sure that a deserving waiter or waitress gets it as more than often management just uses the money to top up the minimum wage. I am not saying that this is the case here but I am certainly concerned. It tends to occur in restaurant where an ‘optional’ service charge at 12.5%(!) is added to the bill and makes you feel awkwa
My mum booked for us to eat at Thai Thai East when she, my dad and other members of my family came up to London for a visit. She chose it because we could use mine and my boyfriend's tastecard. If it had not been for that, we would have never come across Thai Thai East. Old Street is not exactly central. However, when we arrived we were told we could not use the taste card because we did not have a 'reference number'. Now, my mum definitely enquired whether she could use the taste card when she booked, and was told that she could, but was given no reference number. Despite explaining this, we were told we were lying! Yes, we, who booked in advance and went out of their way to eat there, were lying. The waitresses was accusatory and defensive (a sign of guilt in my book). We left, as there is one thing I cannot abide and that is being cheated. My boyfriend (whose has lived and worked in Thailand), like me, was convinced it was a scam. Either the reference number was a sham or we were not given it on purpose. Why? Well, I will bet that nine out of ten people would sit down and eat anyway, paying full price (which btw is overpriced). That is people's nature and it does not help that the restaurant is out of the way, so there are no obvious restaurants nearby. We know the area, as we work nearby, and went to a fantastic Vietnamese restaurant just round the corner, where the service was brilliant (it is a family run place), as was the food and the prices (we paid for the six of us what we would have paid in Thai Thai East with the discount!). Ironically, the Vietnamese place was filled with people, while Thai Thai East had only one table filed. I am surprised they turned away six people who would have drunk their moneys worth. Lets face it, Thai food is not expensive to make, so even with the discount they make money on it. My advice, stay away from Thai Thai East. There are plenty of Asian restaurants nearby - just head towards Shoreditch church.
This was an absolute disaster. I found the restaurant on Top Table with an offer of 50% off. Nowhere on this website did it suggest that you had to make a booking to redeem this offer. Turned up to Thai Thai and we were told we had to make a booking to get the discount - argued that nowhere on the website does it say this and were met with unbelievably dismissive, rude remarks from various members of staff. "Everybody knows" that's how the discount works, apparently.
We asked if we could book a table on our iphone and return half an hour/an hour later (the restaurant was nowhere near full) and were told that No we could not do this.
There was no compromise, absolutely no customer service, and extreme hostility from a restaurant that is clearly aware of its over-inflated prices, thus the need for a ridiculously unclear offer.
Furthermore, other friends visited the restaurant and were charged 20% service charge on 100% of the cost of the food - the discount was disregarded.
Won't be returning.
If you're in the Old Street area and looking for a place to eat I strongly recommend That Thai. The food's very good, reasonably priced and they also offer a good selection of food. The atmosphere's great and the service is second to none. All in all, a pleasurable dining experience.
Dine at Thai Thai East last night, the food was amazing, the portions were large and the presentation was fantastic.
The dessert was very delicious especially the tea ice cream. Excellent service and the atmospher was very buzzing.
Definitely value for money and will return again very soon.
The experience that I had with my boyfriend at Thai Thai restaurant was amazing. The quality of food was authentic and the attentive service had made our evening so special. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to all my friends and colleagues, I will return soon for more yummy foods.
