A great location and a comfortable setting make the Abbey worth giving a go.

The Venue
Located just off the Westminster end of Victoria Street, a few minutes walk from St James’ Park and Parliament Square, the Abbey is a surprisingly comfortable bar in an area dominated by small, traditional pubs popular with the hordes who work nearby.

A staircase takes you down to the main bar area, which is all underground. This being the case there are no windows, which isn’t really a problem in itself but it does change the feel of the place into more of an evening establishment than somewhere you would pop into for a swift half. Nevertheless, this is quite an inviting place with small seating areas sectioned off by pillars, plants and steps and a separate split-level bar area that can be hired out for private functions.

The Atmosphere
Predominantly popular with those working locally and not located ideally for passing trade, the Abbey isn’t an overly busy bar unless there’s a private party, but it still has a buzz about it and the lack of hustle and bustle can be to its credit. For the area this is a good choice for those after a few drinks without winding up in a pub or heading further into Central London where you would be less likely to find somewhere to sit. The staff are friendly enough, keeping themselves to themselves, and you shouldn’t have much of a problem waiting to be served.

The Food
An impressive menu bumps up the rating, with a wide range of snacks and sharing plates alongside good quality fare such as salads and pastas and other standard pub main courses, all for around £7-£8. There is also a tasty tapas menu where you can get four items for £12.

The Drink
A well-stocked fridge offers bottled drinks such as Peroni, Sol and Bulmers and you can get Staropramen and Kronenbourg on tap, along with a guest ale and a decent selection of wine. Prices are a little steep but nothing too painful for the most part, although spirits are quite pricey.

The Last Word
A promising venue worth adding to your list if you find yourself in the neighbourhood.
