The ViewLondon Review
A heart-warming pub offering delicious food and a range of thirst-quenching drinks in a truly delightful setting.
The Venue
This 16th century pub is a real treat – think Chesterfield sofas, wooden benches and gilted mirrors along with quirky touches, such as the collection of butter plates and tea pots that adorn the room. An open fire is inviting for winter nights and there’s an emphasis on sports, with a TV playing the big (and small) matches, and signed sporting memorabilia lining the walls. There’s a function room available for hire, and also a pretty garden and patio area.
The Atmosphere
At first glance, The Adelaide may seem a bit of an old-man’s pub, but take a closer look at the tasteful décor, hear the 40s/50s music and you could be forgiven for thinking you’d entered an New York-style speakeasy – albeit a little rough around the edges. The atmosphere is one of true relaxation, filled with muted chatter and, no doubt, a happy-go-lucky barman. It would be incredibly easy to sink back into a Chesterfield, order a few drinks and find yourself there until closing time.
The Food
There’s a good selection of pub food, with regular specials as well as a main menu. Enjoy homemade soup, such as parsnip and apple served with a warm baguette and butter (£3.75), or more hearty meals like rib-eye steak with port and mushroom sauce (£13.95) served with dauphinoise potatoes and fresh veg, and the chicken, leek and mushroom pie (£9.95). The chef’s specials are enticing, and may include the likes of Thai moules (£9.95) served with chips or a baguette, or the beef rogan josh (£9.25). There is also a choice of meat on Sundays for the traditional roast, and a good range of cheeses as the perfect end to a meal.
The Drink
You’ll find all the usual spirit brands here, including Gordon’s, Smirnoff, Bell’s and Bacardi, and a good range of beers includes Spitfire, Kent’s Best, Master Brew and Early Bird. There’s also a good wine list, with the ever popular prosecco priced at £27.60 a bottle.
The Last Word
Great food, great drinks and a great atmosphere – you are sure to fall in love with The Adelaide.
