If you're thirsty, hungry and have some pennies to spare head to The Angelic in Islington.

The Venue
The Angelic is perfectly located for the Upper Street throngs who turn their noses up at nearby choices like Wetherspoons. It sits on the corner of Liverpool Road, just a two minute stroll from Angel tube station and the myriad of bus routes that run along Upper Street.

Inside, you're faced with typical Islington gastro pub fare - a mixture of light and dark woods, two bars over two floors filled with your standard tables and chairs for couples and groups of four. If that's all a bit dull, there's a decent outdoor area where you can smoke.

The Atmosphere
Let's cut to the chase, The Angelic is on the expensive side. Therefore, expect to see the upper echelons of local society coming in for an organic Sauvignon Blanc whilst discussing how baby Cuthbert has recently uttered his first oxymoron.

The pub's best moments are the toilets that sometimes, if you're lucky, play old episodes of Blackadder and Fawlty Towers through speakers in the walls. This only becomes awkward and annoying when you get so carried away with laughter that you don't return to your date for 25 minutes.

The Food
Eating at The Angelic is a mouthwatering prospect. The only problem is you'll have to sell your mother to afford a dessert. For starters, dishes like the goat cheese with marinated peppers, toasted pine nuts and pomegranate vinaigrette comes in at £6.80.

You can't look much further than the aged Aberdeen Angus rib eye steak for a main course, coming as it does with home cut chips and a choice of mushroom and garlic or peppercorn sauce for £18.50. If you make it down on a Sunday, the roast dinner is a popular choice but is it really worth it at £15? You decide. For pudding, hit up the English cheese board, it comes with fruit chutney, biscuits, late night sleeping issues and comes in at £9.

The Drink
The wine list at The Angelic is pretty wide-ranging. A small glass of Jacques Veritier red or white comes in cheapest at £3.85 whilst a bottle of Sancerre Le Petit Broux is £32. There are also four Spanish roses to choose from whilst a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne tops the list at £70.

The draught beer options aren't as overwhelming as some, and a pint will cost you around £3.60. The choices are Fosters, Kronenbourg, Heineken, Birra Morreti, Edelweiss, Bulmers, Guinness and cask ales. The bottled beers are between £3.50 and £4.50. For your delectation are Becks, Budvar, Corona, Duvel and Bulmers. The spirits options are frustratingly few, although if you buy a double you will get your house mixer for free.

The Last Word
A little on the expensive side but worth the money for a treat.
