The ViewLondon Review
The Anglers is a rustic, truly British pub in a great setting on the banks of the Thames.
The Venue
Set right on the river opposite Teddington weir, The Anglers is a large, imposing pub in a very pretty setting. Creaking wooden floors, well-worn leather chairs and varnished wooden tables all work to give the pub a rustic feel, while a colour scheme of light browns and greens, heavy velvet curtains and paintings on the wall keep things classy. There’s a large bar area and the back of the pub opens into lots of little nooks and crannies, and then a huge conservatory that leads out to the equally huge garden. There’s plenty of seating inside and out, but summer is sure to draw in crowds by the dozen, so get there early to nab a good table. The Anglers even has its own private beach on the water and people often moor up to pop in for a drink and a bite to eat.
The Atmosphere
Family-friendly, The Anglers is filled with people of all ages, with Sunday lunches being particularly busy. The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, and staff are friendly and welcoming. A popular place for big groups, the conservatory is often filled with big family parties, and the garden provides the ideal setting for summer drinking.
The Food
The varied menu is predominantly British, with hearty home-cooked dishes that are sure to please. Starters may include pressed ham hock terrine with mulled wine coulis (£5.75) and Severn & Wye Valley smoked salmon with crusty bread (£5.95), while mains offer fresh pork hog roast bap with apple sauce, fries and salad (£7.95) – impossible tender pork in a soft bap with tangy apple sauce – or, on a Sunday, roasts such as roast sirloin of Hampshire beef (£12.95) with juicy, succulent meat and a giant Yorkshire pudding, crunchy roast potatoes and a generous amount of fresh veg. Desserts (if you can leave room) include old-fashioned spotted dick with lashings of custard (£4.95) and pecan pie with Earl Grey ice cream (£4.95). A well-priced junior menu includes a roast for just £6.75 and fish fingers, chips and beans for just £4.95.
The Drink
This is a Fuller’s pub, so there’s a great choice of beers, including Fuller’s Discovery, Seafarers Ale, Bengal Lancer and Aspall Cyder on tap, and bottles such as Singha and Peroni. Pints start from £3.30 and bottles from £3.45. The wine list has a good range of choices, from zingy, fruity whites to soft, rounded reds. Bottles start from £13.95, with a 175ml glass at £3.50 and a 250ml glass at £5.
The Last Word
Whether you want to get cosy by the fire in winter or sip G&Ts outside in the summer, The Anglers is the place for you, and it has great food and drink to boot.
