This place used to be good on a Saturday night a few years ago. The crowd used to be older, mature and pleasant. However, now its full of young kids, its over crowded and the music is way too loud!! The range of music was good but repeated throughout the night. I will definitely not going back to this place. To top it the last two times I have been there, there has been fights.
Do not go to this club if you want anything original. Despite advertising that it plays old skool & club classics the majority of music was from 2010-2012. The manager is on a complete power trip, despite me asking him for my money back because I did not think the music was right for how it was advertised, he basically made out i was an idiot and fobbed me off. Whilst in the club I was assaulted by one of his doormen, despite pointing this out to the manager, again he did not take this seriously at all. I was also pushed by another guy in front of the manager who did not care when i explained to him that I had been assaulted. Another girl was punched in the club and when she complained about it to the staff they became argumentative and basically treated her like an idiot too. So if you like listening to crap music, being fobbed off and treated like dirt, and assaulted, this is the club for you!
Myself an a friend went on a joint birthday night out on 25.2.12 to this club. The club it self is very nice , clean an smart, especially the toilets. The London Groove team Humphrey an Claire were very helpful, an sorted our guestlist an reserved seating area. The music was excellent. drinks reasonable averaged £5 each. The main let down for us was unnecessary long waiting times outside in the long queue an rather rude door/security staff.... its easier an quicker to get through an American Airport than this club..... Would not return in a hurry due to this!!!
I went to the Anthologist this past Saturday - what an amazing place, truly exceptional and the best part was the music!!
I would definitely go to this place again, and if you're planning on going - be sure to reserve a table/booth through the team at londongroove. They were absolutely fantastic from start to end - no hassles adding several people to the guest-list and more importantly the area the reserved for me was exactly what was discussed on the phone.
Best music in the City!
I recently organised my birthday at The Anthologist. The venue was lush and very inviting. The decor was classy and managed to a high standard.
I would sincerely like to thank Humphrey and the London Groove team for being very professional, courteous and accommodating. There was a friendly atmosphere from the start from all parties involved.....including the door staff! Although, they're a business at the end of the day, I felt they went that extra mile. I would recommend the venue and the London Groove team to anyone looking for a party venue.
Keep up the good work!
We booked a birthday here with the offer to buy a table. Through the emails they told us this was not necessary, we had a group of 10 males and 7 females which we were told via email was fine. Once we got to the door the refused us entry since it was not what they called a mixed group, we explained that it was 7 females and 10 makes but they refused to let three males in, of which one was the birthday host. The place is full of false promises and door security and staff that are very rude, strong advice stay away if you don't want your night to be ruined.
I booked an area for my birthday in October and had an absolutely fab time here. Anthologist staff and venue are top notch, the venue itself is chic and sophisticated and the music and vibe are equal to it. All of my friends had a fantastic time here thanks also in the main to the staff at London Groove who I'd thoroughly recommend booking through! The staff at London Groove were professional and efficient in getting everything organised from the area reserved to a guest-list and even a bar tab. Minimum effort was required and everyone got in with no trouble thanks to the door staff and london groove staff at the venue. Although you might queue for a while before getting in, it's well worth the wait!
I celebrated my 25th birthday with a group of my friends on the 12/11/2011. I had such a great time.
Between Claire and Humphrey they made my night really lovely, with their great customer service and professionalism.
The table I had booked was perfect the only thing I would say is that it would have been nice if we had complimentary shots, but this is going by previous experience.
The club was lovely very diverse with friendly people and staff. Drinks were over priced in my opinion, but hey ho it was my birthday!
Music was great a little bit inconsistent at times i.e. songs didnt always flow with one another but still good.
I will definitely be going back, I hope to celebrate New yrs there!
All in all I recommend The Anthologist.
I came here for a birthday and had a great time. Great music, reasonably priced drinks and great customer service with London Groove. Would definitely recommend it to mates.
I would never recommend this nightclub to anyone! The overzealous door staff ruined a birthday party, even though we had booked a booth had to send in a guest list with ages and the gender of every guest, a series of e- mails and phone calls later and a payment made for a booth, we all travelled 60 miles only to have the door staff turn us away. Their reason we had too many men in the party and not enough girls, we explained we'd paid for a booth and the guest list had been agreed. They were not interested. The thing was this would have been credible and understandable if there wasn't a group of guys standing at the door waiting to get in! The party host was in tears, and out of pocket! We were not going to let this mediocre venue ruin our night, so we all went to 'cargo' and had one of the best nights ever! The club was great, the music, atmosphere and crowd were fantastic, we are regular clubbers and have never been turned away ever! We are great people and we have never been in any trouble but obviously our faces didn't fit with the door staff. The thing is we all spent an obscene amout of money, so they really missed out! Their loss. In short don't waste your time with The Anthologist, go to Cargo instead and you'll have a great night :)))
I'm a regular at The Anthologist in the restaurant and also the bar for post-work drinks. I have always found the level of service and quality of food fantastic! Myself and 3 colleagues have just returned from lunch and i have to say it was one of my best visits there yet. As soon as we arrived we mentioned we were a bit pushed for time, the staff were extremely efficient and friendly and managed to serve us the 2 courses and coffees we'd hoped for in an hour without any of us feeling rushed. The food was great as always, my personal favourite being the fish pie. There is always such an upbeat atmosphere there, especially in the bar in the evening! A definite recommendation to anyone in the area.
Ok I had my 25th b,day here, the croud, price, staff were all welcoming and even though there was a big croud of us (mixed) they still allowed us in and we had a great night, a big thank you to humphrey! Andy Sahota!
The venue is lovely, but the service was poor and the food terrible. I ordered a Thai beef salad - totally tasteless, no heat and no flavour. My companions duck flatbread would have fed a family of four, providing they liked soggy iceberg, excess bread and tiny pieces of duck (admittedly tasty). I would have liked to have expressed my dissatisfaction, but no-one asked us how are food was, the service was terribly slow - such a wait for a drink, when it was half empty. But the staff did seem to be thoroughly enjoying themselves- so not all bad. Avoid it if you have any sense.
My experience was similar to NdF's. Dinner for four on a weekday evening. The restaurant wasn't terribly busy. The music was a little loud but this wasn't a huge issue for us.
Starters were excellent and reasonably priced. However problems seemed to begin with the arrival of the mains.
Three arrived at once but we had to wait around five minutes for the fourth. The three which did arrive together had clearly been waiting for a while and were lukewarm, although very good otherwise.
We ordered a second bottle of wine - this took 20 minutes to arrive.
Three of our plates were cleared but we waited almost an hour for the fourth to be taken and for dessert menus, attempting to catch the staffs' eyes to no avail. We decided to ask for coffees and the bill, but not before a waiter walked away while one of my friends was in the middle of speaking to him.
There was no apology for the service problems and the service charge was automatically added to the bill. We paid it because we didn't want a scene but we won't be back. It's a shame because the food is excellent and it would have been so easy to get the other things right.
Just went there for lunch, waited 30mins for a drink and 45mins to get food. Simple two fish and chips and 2 diet cokes. The manager was pretty rude asking who we ordered the food from and then decided to tell us that because the couple next to us had fish and chips it was all confused with our order. When it finally arrived the batter on the fish wasn't properly cooked. I have been there a few times and never been too impressed with the service and food. Never again. Stay away people unless you have over 2 hours for lunch!
Booked a seating area for my guests and I on Saturday night. No nonsense on arrival at the door. Escorted immediately to our table. Great venue! Great tunes with a Rnb/Hip hop vibe! Great atmosphere! Great night all round!
Absolutely amazing place! The atmosphere is brilliant and so is the music. I celebrated my 25th birthday and would definitely recommend The Anthologist for a great night out! Renisa :o)
I celebrated my 30th here last Saturday. My guests and I didn't have any trouble getting in (it was guestlist anyway) or with security, bar staff etc. The staff were quite friendly and I recieved a warm welcome to my booked area. Music was great throughout the night playing a mix of nice 80s classics to latest hits.
Would come again!
Thanks
Satskiya
I just have to say wonderful!
I had my hen night here and they looked after me like i was a celebrity.
I had the best time and a easy transition from door to club.
The music was a great mix.
Im very glad i chose this venue, i went to the folly for my meal which is a sister place to the anthologist and was also amazing.
Thank you all involved to make my night a great one! xx
We went here last nite for a friends birthday but when we got in the queue we were told our friend was too drunk (although she was not but just excited as it was her birthday!) and we would have to wait outside of the queue for 15 mins for her to sober up! It seemed very apparent that 98% of the clubbers were Asian or part of an Asian group where as we were mixed races but no Asians! After finally get inside we were followed everywhere by bouncers one friend tripped and then was told she was too drink n needed to go out n get fresh air and then were told we were drunk coz we were sitting when we said we not drunk they said well u don't need to sit then n told us to stand n took away the chairs my friend n I were followed by a female bouncer to the toilet even! Unbelievable how can somewhere be so racist! If they were Asians going to a 80% white/black filled club and were treated like that can you imagine the accusations that would have been flying! Then after speaking to one Asian guy he told me that the managers there were sometimes racist towards non Asians! Enough said! Would never recommend to anyone who is not Asian! I've never been so angry!
Its is pretty sad to see bad reviews about this place as i really like it.
I go there pretty often as i work just around the corner.
I love the decor of the place and the idea of quick lunches and food presentation is amazing.
I can not complain about the service as I get recognised by the staff and always get a good table, attentive service. Just an advice if you want a good table on Thursday or Friday afternoon, Book in advance!
Love the venue, cant complain about the service and definitely will be going back!
We planned to go to Anthologist for my sister's birthday, made sure we were on the gueslist, all over 23 and in a mixed group. We were not allowed in as the security claimed that one of our group was too drunk. He had 3 drinks previously and was standing peacefully in the queue, although apparently having your hands in your pocket is a sign for lewd drunken behaviour. When we were discussing the situation with another member of security, he proceeded to inform a girl in my group that the reason they are not letting us in is because she is ugly. Unbelievable!
Went there for a friends birthday drinks on a Saturday night.
They say they open at 930pm on Saturdays but this is a lie. They don't open the doors till 10.30pm, and the bouncer like walking up and down selecting random reasons not to let people in. A couple of reasons i heard were 'your shoes aren't smart enough and 'we won't let 2 guys in together without a girl'.
The queue itself (about 100 people) was made up of about 80% Asian bar goers. The people they refused to let in all seemed white even though they were dressed the same as everyone else and in similar sized groups!
Inside we ordered a couple of bottles of wine, we received plastic dirty wine glasses on different sizes. When we asked can we change glasses we were told 'no' and the barman walked off.
Will never go back to this place.
My colleagues were quite disappointed. We arrived at 13.10 for a 13.15 table and were seated quite quickly. We received our starters promptly, and the bruschetta were good, but the squid was so greasy my friend couldn't finish it. Once these were cleared away it took at least 30 minutes for our main meals to arrive. Unfortunately when they finally did arrive all three of the sandwiches were cold. One friend had a steak sandwich and noticed it didn't have the 'Anthologist mustard' on it (as was stated on the menu) and when we asked the waitress about it she was quite stroppy and told us it wasn't meant to have mustard on it and she then after all that discovered the sandwich was stone cold. My other friend had a chicken/bacon sandwich which was also cold, but both were still palatable. I, on the other hand, had a roast vegetable sandwich which would have been very nice had it been served hot, but aubergine, courgette and pepper cold are far from a good texture nor a good flavour. My friend actually saw it sitting on the side for at least 15 minutes and only realised it was mine when she saw the waitress pick it up to bring it to our table. We did let our server know all of this, but clearly with an hours lunch break by the time we had received our main meals we would not have had time to send the food back.
With slow service and cold food, I'm afraid we would not recommend the restaurant. They could really monopolise the area as they are different from the normal pubs around, but the service is quite clearly lacking.
The bar is ok, but I was pretty frustrated when I saw my bar receipts the following day and found that the bar staff had added 12.5% service charge to every round of drinks I ordered and paid for using card. I won’t be going back.
Visited this bar with a colleague and a journalist for a meeting last week. What an appallingly managed bar. Staff everywhere but behind the bar. One other person at the bar and we both waited ten minutes for a drink. Found somewhere to sit and got told in the rudest manner that the area we had chosen was booked for a party at 6. We were there at 3:30! Nevertheless we asked where we could sit and were pointed toward another area. No sooner had we taken our jackets off we were approached by another super rude member of staff who told us the area we were in was clearly being set up for a party. Grrr. So yet again we asked where was vacant (worth noting there were five people in the entire bar at this point) only to be told every area was booked so we'd have to stand at the bar. Twenty minutes after doing this we were told to move yet again. Turned out that the part of the bar we were at was also booked! The most incredulous part was when all of these parties arrived there were only a handful in each group. Every other punter was squashed into the middle. Seems to be this bat focuses on parties and completely ignores regular customers despite punters outnumbering parties ten to one. We would have left at the start but for us meeting others. None of us will ever return and are spreading the word to friends and colleagues. Absolute hell hole. Avoid at all cost.
I went to this bar on Friday evening having booked in advance, a process which actually became more complicated than necessary. When my friends and I arrived at the bar, there was no-one at the reception. I hadn't been told where we would be seated so we waited to speak someone of the staff. We waited for ages and as we couldn't see anyone, we then had to wander around guessing which area might have been reserved for us. It was unhelpful that none of the tables/sofa had named placards. This certainly wasn't a great start to the evening. Once we had managed to find someone who could show us to our table/sofa, it then transpired that my booking for dinner hadn't been made. When I spoke to the staff, apart from the owner/manager who did apologize I found them to be very rude and dismissive. The whole situation wouldn't have been so bad had they immediately apologized and offered something complementary while we waited for a table to become available. Eventually, we were shown to a table. We spent the rest of the evening guessing what might have gone into the complementary bowl of punch, given its indistinguishable and bizarre taste. The food was average and again service was poor. This is definitely one to avoid.
I don't normally write reviews but I felt somewhat urged to do so after my evening in The Anthologist.
I'd been in a foul mood all day and hadn't eaten a thing when I walked past with a friend who suggested we go in.
Upon arrival, a gregarious young woman gave a huge smile and welcomed us to the venue.
They were already looking pretty busy so we had to sit up on a bar around the kitchen which at first I wasn't that happy about but it turned out to be a great place to sit- I even asked the chef to help me decide what to have and he took the time to explain a couple of the daily specials which I couldn't believe because they looked so busy.
I had the clam chowder which was great- it came in a bread bowl so I obviously polished that off too. I then had the bream on the specials which was to die for and my friend had a cote du boeuf
Both of us left in such better moods.
I just think that for the amount of money your paying this place delivers great food and great service and I'll definitely go back there. I would recommend it to anyone who wants good wine and excellent pub food and a buzzing atmosphere.
I attempted to go to the bar yesterday evening for a friend's birthday. My friend and I had dressed up smartly, as advised to, and went along, getting there at about 9.25 when we walked in. We were looked at in a disgusting way by two of the staff, before a doorman came and informed us the bar was not open until 9.30, and escorted us out. Fair enough, but don't be so rude about it please. To be honest, it looked like a ten-year-old girl's disco in there anyway.
Returning twenty minutes later, (we just wandered around, the area around it was dead) we found our friends in the queue (yes a queue had miraculously appeared, but people were still not being let in, hmmm...). More door staff had appeared and again being very rude, started inspecting people's shoes, declaring someone to be not dressed appropriately and almost hauling them out of the queue. ID was then demanded from everyone (even though my friend was celebrating his 25th birthday, and we were all clearly well over 18), and those without ID were just refused entry on the spot, and again hauled out of the queue. They were very stand-offish with my friend whose birthday it was when he tried to ask them questions, but proceded to then charge everyone a £5 entry fee, even though my friend had booked an area and paid a deposit, and we were the only group in the queue.
Thankfully I was one of the people not admitted due to lack of ID (I haven't been ID'd in years) as I'm sure I would have been charged through the nose for a night I would not have enjoyed, in a bar that looked really quite pretencious, to be treated appallingly by rude staff.
Therefore I would recommend going anywhere but here (unless you like any of what I've mentioned above), as there are much nicer, friendlier places to go and celebrate one's birthday, or for just a normal night out.
Great place..had a great night! Also try another place if you get time call denelli italia just up the road
thanks
I went there first for NYE and i can say it was fantastic! The staff was friendly and the atmosphere was very nice, it had properly mixed crowd and they were friendly too...
The drinks are not that expensive and the DJ was fabulous! He played all the tracks i paid to listen! It was definitely worth the £30!
Best New Year Party I have ever been! I would defitely recommend the club to anyone who wants to party in the area!
Reserved an area for our office party. Upon arrival, there was a very long queue we were able to jump. Music was good as it catered to all genres. Good night! Definately would recommend, but make sure you get on the guest list.
Been here a few times now, purely for convenience as its underneath my office.
Do not, and I repeat, DO NOT waste your time or money going to the Anthologist. The Décor is quite good, the food is average and the service is astonishingly bad. The waiters/staff are so rude, ignorant and downright obnoxious you will be actively shocked. I endured one waiter shouting and swearing at the top of his voice in the middle of the restaurant for some 5/6 minutes. Once I asked him to be quiet he rolled his eyes, offered no apology and simply walked off to other recount the story to the other staff, only for them to find it particularly funny.
The bad service continued for the rest of the meal. Be carefull if you choose to use this venue for a business lunch/meeting as you will be left embarrassed.
I'm absolutely gobsmacked by the average rating for The Anthologist. Everyone I work with loves that place and we're there for lunch at least once a week- more often than not I'll end up there for a few drinks after work at least once a week too. The staff are all nice and have real personality which makes a nice change and the food is amazing. Although I've sunk myself into the terrible habit of always ordering the crispy duck salad yum! We even had our christmas party there and it was ace. The night flew by without a worry and even my old boss admitted he liked the music. We're hiring out the private room downstairs next time we have a special occasion because it's looks really cool and retro and would be perfect for a sort of 50s night or something like that. Definitely the best bar in The City. By far.
Paid £25 a ticket to go to The Anthologist for New Years Eve specifically because it said 90's soul music would be played. Didn't hear one song that resembled soul, they should have called it 'bollywood Nights' as it would have been a more appropriate name for the music played and the attending guests.
We were there for Halloween party. My rating is -5 yes that's correct. I will not recommend this place for nobody. Service so pour plus all barman are thief. Three times I caught barman to tried give me wrong change. I will never go there again.
Me and my girls decided to try this swanky place out last week for a little birthday treat. And what a treat it was. We had only been seated a few seconds before we were offered some yummy drink choices. Eventually we chose a mixture of cocktails so we could all try. The waitress was very patient as we ummed and ahhed over it all, she even chipped in when needed to finally decided telling us what they had in them and if she thought they might be a tad too strong, she was right! We then ordered lots of sharing bits to start and yet again the waitress was on hand to tell us what was in everything and when asked she told us what sounded like the perfect sharing combo for the amount of hungry girls and all our different tastes in food. Her knowledge of the menu was really great and none of us went hungry. We also ordered wonderful mains, two of us had fish, one fish and chips and one scampi both of which were totally yummy and my other two ladies had noodle salads, Thai beef and duck. They were equally as yummy, one of them was a little late out of the kitchen but we were kept informed and they actually took it off the bill for us which we all agreed was a very nice thing to do. We polished off the meal with yet another spot on suggestion from the waitress and we all shared the black forest Knickerbocker glory, which was pretty much the cherry on the cake. The lighting could have been slightly brighter in the restaurant but apart from that we had a truly yummy time and we will most certainly be back!
We recently went to the Anthologist, Gresham Street. Fabulous food, which is let down by the terrible service. The servers kept trying to leave food we did not order on our table and then tried to charge us for various things we did not order. The staff have a rude and arrogant attitude. Whilst the food is great, the terrible service make it a throughly unpleasant experience.
The food is great. However, the extremely poor service means I would never recommend this restaurant. Even though we preordered our meals, the staff were very slow and disorganised. They tried to charge us for food we did not order. One of my group had food spilled on her by the server. On the whole, I found the staff very rude and arrogant - a very unprofessional and unpleasant experience I will never repeat.
High expectations, after twice failing to get a table without a booking, were dashed by arrogant inattentive service. The decor is great. The food is good, but our selection of food sharing doesn't work practically for lunch - no warning from the waiter. Service was consistently slow, so lunch in less than an hour is a challenge. Atmosphere is buzzing, almost too noisy for conversation. Much potential, but I won't be going back for several months.
