The ViewLondon Review
The Arches is a local bar in South Hampstead that draws more than just the locals thanks to its superior wine list and tempting food. It is one of the most popular bars in Hampstead and is almost always full in the evenings.
The Venue
On the cusp of Westminster and Camden, the Arches is a small red brick building with dining on two floors and a small garden, which is the perfect place to sit in summer with a cappuccino. Inside, the wine bar is filled with ornaments and trinkets from all over the world. There are puppets, art deco lamps and posters celebrating foreign festivals.
The Atmosphere
This is a good place to go if you need cheering up because there is always a good crowd and the atmosphere is friendly but not intrusive. Although the bar is usually full of winers and diners, it is not too noisy for good conversation. The staff are also attentitive and friendly.
The Food
The food at The Arches is wholesome and hearty as well as exotic. A Mediterranean theme ranging from Greek to French and Italian is the name of the game when it comes to sussing out the menu. Dishes like the duck liver cream pate served with homemade cranberry sauce and toast is a delicious starter, as are main courses including saute king prawns with chilli garlic and coriander butter with saffron basmati rice. However you can also enjoy more traditional steaks or roast rump of lamb.
The Drink
The list of red and white wines is more extensive than most other wine bars in London. House wines are available by the glass, bottle or even half-bottle. There is also a wide selection of Burgundy, St Emilion and Rhone red wines. When it comes to white wines the selection is less wide but still very good and excellent value for money.
The Last Word
The celebrated wine list at The Arches coupled with the relaxed and friendly atmosphere is what makes the bar worth crossing London for.
