The Best Chinese Restaurants
After years of terrible gloop hiding nondescript meat, London now boasts some of the best Chinese restaurants in the land, with everything from fine dining and poncey affairs to properly authentic spots that take your tongue off with their searing chilli heat. Chinese restaurants aren’t necessarily for everyone though, especially those places that serve up those really traditional dishes (dry fried pork intestines, anyone?), but there’s definitely enough choice, not least from the selection we’ve chosen as the best Chinese restaurants in London town.
My Old Place
88-90 Middlesex Street, E1 7EZ
This is one of those authentic, traditional Sichuan places, where chilli is king and offal abounds. You can only book if you’re a large group, which means that most people will have to queue for what can be a very long time, but once you’re in it proves well worth the wait, with hilariously efficient staff bringing plate after inexpensive plate of excellent Chinese food.

Ba Shan
24 Romilly Street, Soho, London, W1D 5AH
Specialising in authentic Chinese street food, this is another one right in the midst of Chinatown, sitting opposite its younger brother, Bar Shu. It’s a great little place to visit if you want something informal, with the snacks menu being particularly good – not least the lotus leaf buns with stewed pork.

Memories of China
65-69 Ebury Street, Belgravia, London, SW1W 0NZ
If you fancy something a little more refined from your Chinese restaurants then this place in Belgravia is worth a try – it’s even had the thumbs up from Gordon Ramsay in its time. There are hints of westernisation on the menu but that’s not necessarily a bad thing – lamb, it transpires, lends itself very well indeed to Chinese cuisine.

Red N Hot
59 Charing Cross Road, Strand, London, WC2H 0NE
With another venue in London, and a couple more in Manchester and Birmingham, this could just be another generic chain with little to offer. However, the authentic Sichuan flavours are very impressive indeed… but only if you really like heat. They’re unapologetic with their liberal use of the very hottest chillis, so get a glass of milk and enjoy.

New Four Seasons Chinese Restaurant
84 Queensway, Bayswater, London, W2 3RL
Another one where you might have to queue, this place in Bayswater is distinctly no-frills but the roast duck is phenomenally good – perhaps even the very best in London. One word of advice though: book a table and still be ready to queue – if you don’t, you’ll be there for ages.

China Tang
The Dorchester, 53,Park Lane, Mayfair, London, W1K 1QA
If you fancy something ever so sophisticated then this very posh Chinese restaurant at The Dorchester on Park Lane is well worth a visit. If that is, you can afford it. It’s popular with A-listers, does excellent (if unadventurous) food and looks the part. And if you like cocktails, this is the place to go.

Grand Imperial
Grosvenor Hotel Victoria, 101 Buckingham Palace Road, Victoria, London, SW1W 0SJ
Another pricey and posh one, this excellent dining room at the Grosvenor Hotel features some very good cooking from head chef Ran Cheung. The Peking duck is exquisite, and they even carve it at your table which some will love and other will feel a bit awkward about. Either way, it tastes amazing.
