The Best French Restaurants
Ah, French restaurants. Although there is still the odd instance of them coming over all haughty and condescending, for the best part they're pretty damn well represented in London, especially when you start going to the high end places. That's not to say you have to pay a lot of money for excellent French fare though, and the list below shows off both ends of what's a very tasty spectrum.
Le Gavroche
43 Upper Brook Street, Mayfair, London, W1K 7QR
Albert and Michel Roux made serious culinary waves with this restaurant in the Sixties and it just seems to keep going from strength to strength. Now under the stewardship of Michel Roux Jr., Le Gavroche was the first restaurant in the UK to be awarded three Michelin stars, and it remains very high on the list of any self-respecting gastronome's venues to visit.

Le Mercury
140a Upper Street, Islington, London, N1 1QY
Proving that French restaurants can be very affordable, Le Mercury is a brilliant little place on Upper Street that serves excellent French food at remarkable prices. The decor might be a little rough around the edges but that merely adds to the charm of this romantic, atmospheric and ever-busy Gallic haunt.

Les Deux Salons
40-42 William IV Street, Strand, London, WC2N 4DD
The newest venture from the guys behind Wild Honey and Arbutus, Les Deux Salons is definitely one of our favourite restaurants in London, let alone one of our favourite French ones. Gorgeous seasonal food, a cracking two-floor brasserie setting and a lovely atmosphere... you could almost be in Paris.
Le Vacherin Malcolm John
76-77 South Parade, Chiswick, London, W4 5LF
Malcolm John's delicious French brasserie over in Chiswick is a taste of France if ever there was one. A gorgeously authentic menu, an impressive dining room and the sounds of Edith Piaf (on what could well be a gramaphone) combine to make those of us that don't live in west London very jealous indeed. Brilliantly thick French accents on the staff finish things off nicely.

Galvin La Chapelle
St Botolphs Hall, 35 Spital Square, Spitalfields, London, E1 6DY
The third restaurant opened up by the Galvin brothers, this is right by Spitalfields Market. The modern French food is some of the best you'll find in London, and although it's expensive, you can get some excellent lunchtime deals. And it's got a gorgeous setting to boot.

Coq d'Argent
No 1 Poultry, The City, London, EC2R 8EJ
With one of the capital's largest wine lists, this well respected restaurant atop No 1 Poultry in the heart of the City is a must for wine lovers. The food is easily its match though, with head chef Mickael Weiss serving a very fine selection of classic French dishes, with a twist or two thrown in for good measure.
