The Best Indian Restaurants
Serving up a list of the best Indian restaurants is always fraught with danger, as inevitably everybody's local curry house is apparently the best. Putting that to one side, this is a list of our favourite restaurants serving Indian food - be they curry houses in the middle of nowhere or high-end venues with Michelin stars.
Indian Zing
236 Kings Street, Hammersmith, London, W6 ORF
Ask any west Londoner worth their salt which is the best Indian restaurant in the capital and this one will often pop up. It's only a touch more expensive than your average curry house but this is authentic Indian cooking at its very best - the lamb biryani has one greedy member of our team heading back to this place much more than perhaps he should...

Tamarind
20 Queen Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 5PR
At the more expensive end of the spectrum we have Tamarind, the Michelin-starred Indian restaurant made famous by Atul Kochhar. Tamarind uses the traditional Moghul cuisine as its base, before making it look all fancy to keep those pesky judges at Michelin happy.

Namaaste Kitchen
64 Parkway, Camden, London, NW1 7AH
This Camden favourite comes from the team behind Salaam Namaste, and dare we say it, we think it's slightly better. Strictly speaking it's Indian and Pakistani food, but we're not speaking strictly, and it deserves a place on the list thanks to the dumpukht biryani with lamb. So it gets one.

Veeraswamy
Mezzanine Floor, Victory House, 99-101 Regent Street, Piccadilly, London, W1B 4RS
Not just because we're nostalgic (it's officially the oldest Indian restaurant in London), Veeraswamy justifies all the interest it gets. And at the end of the day, if you've been around for eighty-odd years, you really must be doing something right.

Benares Restaurant and Bar
12a Berkeley Square House, Berkeley Square, Mayfair, London, W1J 6BS
Atul Kochhar's excellent Michelin starred Indian restaurant came back like a very tasty phoenix from the flames of a 2009 fire in even better shape. It's a slick and sexy venue with an emphasis on big and bold flavours, not least its slow-braised lamb shoulder with cumin and apricot - worth the trip alone.

Shayona Restaurant
54-62 Meadow Garth, Brentfield Road, Neasden, London, NW10 8HD
This Neasden venue is one of the best Indian restaurants for any vegetarians that fancy a bit of spice. It's incredibly authentic and offers only sattvic - or yoga - cuisine, which is apparently very good for the soul. But better than that, it tastes very good indeed.

Hot Stuff
19 Wilcox Road, Vauxhall, London, SW8 2XA
The polar opposite of somewhere like Benares or Tamarind is this tiny little place in Vauxhall - it's bring-your-own booze and you access the toilets via the kitchen. Some might - and often do - argue that the flavours are every bit as good, if not better than places charging £100 a head.

Amirah's Kitchen
356 Old York Road, Wandsworth, London, SW18 1SS
This might be a trek for most but if you're lucky enough to live in Wandsworth, well, you're lucky enough to have one of the best Indian restaurants in London on your doorstep. Its modern - and superb - take on authentic Indian street food should keep this place as busy as it often is.
