The Best Set Menus
Just because a restaurant boasts a mountain of Michelins and a signature dish that tops £50, it doesn’t mean you can’t sample their very fine wares for a fraction of the price. However good a restaurant is, they won’t be busy all the time, and to get bums on seats they’ll offer set menus which won’t break the bank but which should showcase all those skills in the kitchen. You do have to be careful though, so take a look at those we deem the best set menus in London, and get ready to tuck in.
Le Gavroche
43 Upper Brook Street, Mayfair, London, W1K 7QR
This two-Michelin star restaurant from Michel Roux Jr is eye-poppingly expensive come dinner time, and although the set menu isn’t exactly cheap at just shy of £50 per person, it remains a much more affordable way to sample possibly the capital’s very best restaurant. You do get value for that too, though, as this is widely regarded as one of, if not the, best set menu in town.

The Ledbury
127 Ledbury Road, Notting Hill, London, W11 2AQ
Brett Graham’s work in the kitchen of this two-Michelin star restaurant has been making waves ever since it opened in 2005. It’s another pricey one but £35 for three courses come lunchtime is remarkably good value – and you’re much more likely to get a table than in the evenings, when foodies flock from far and wide

Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, 66 Knightsbridge, Knighsbridge, London, SW1X 7LA
Heston Blumenthal’s first London restaurant caused such a stir when it opened that it’s still incredibly hard to book a table in the evening. There’s not a huge choice on the set lunch menu (£32 for three courses), and sadly the meat fruit and tipsy cake don’t feature, but the quality is ridiculously good nonetheless – and at least you can say you've eaten there.

The Gilbert Scott
St Pancras Renaissance London Hotel, Euston Road, King's Cross, London, NW1 2AR
Marcus Wareing’s restaurant within the splendour of the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel might be a touch too stuffy for some but the food is classic British stuff done very well indeed. The ‘Express’ set menu is only available for two hours throughout the day but at under £30 for three courses, it’s a great way to sample a very able kitchen.

The Square
6-10 Bruton Street, Mayfair, London, W1J 6PU
Holder of two Michelin stars since 1998, The Square’s set menu is one of the very finest lunchtime treats you can have. It’s £30 for three stunning courses, and although there are only two choices per course on any give day, you can rest assured that whatever you choose will tickle your taste buds very nicely indeed.

Pollen Street Social
8-10 Pollen Street, Mayfair, London, W1S 1NQ
Jason Atherton’s very fine restaurant continues the brilliant and beautiful work he was doing at Maze. It’s another one that’s tricky to get into, but the lunchtime set menu is definitely one of the best – and most affordable - in town. Three courses come in at just over £25, which is remarkable given the quality of what’s on offer.

Corrigan's Mayfair
28 Upper Grosvenor Street, Mayfair, London, W1K 7EH
Richard Corrigan’s excellent, eponymous restaurant not only offers three courses for under £30, but throws in a carafe of wine for free, so barring a little tip to your lovely waiter, you know exactly what you’ll be spending. Cheese is an extra fiver, but so good that it’s more than worth it.
