Any man worth his salt appreciates a good steak. It's probably because it's such a simple, Neanderthal, pleasure: get meat, throw on fire, eat. In reality though, there are myriad things that can influence and affect what constitutes a good steak. Cuts, breeds, hang times, cooking process, temperatures and of course, how to have it cooked all play a part, but if you want to try the restaurants that we think get it right, check out these cornucopias of carnivorous delights.
The Spitalfields venue caused quite a stir when it opened but, for us, this atmospheric art-deco version in Covent Garden is the perfect setting for what are without doubt some of the very best steaks in London town.

The one place that steak fans think can really match the Hawksmoors, this burgeoning chain is very impressive indeed, even if it's not quite as cool as some of its peers. The steaks are incredible though, with magnificent cuts expertly handled.
This place was something of a surprise - I thought it was merely somewhere to take the City folk for a ride. One of the best sirloins I've had, and a great rack of lamb to boot.

We know this place might not have the best reputation but the Wagyu here is out of this world. Ridiculously expensive it may well be, but it's cooked perfectly and is still the best steak some of us have ever had. By far.

JW Steakhouse

A big board displays the special cuts available, and although they might not be as good as they think they are, they're still pretty good. A favourite of the moneyed of Mayfair.

Considering the area, this place is priced relatively reasonably. However, when you throw in the quality of the meat it actually represents really good value as the steaks here are definitely the match of restaurants which get a lot more press. Certainly one to try.
John Torode's stack of restaurants and bars has to do a good a steak, primarily due to it being in the heart of an area known for its meat. Thankfully it does do a very good steak indeed, with the top floor serving up an impressive selection of rare cuts that include a phenomenal chateaubriand for two. Or one incredibly greedy beast.
This pub and steakhouse over in Kensal Rise is a favourite of many a steak fan, with quality cuts cooked to perfection in one of the nicest boozers in London. Again, the chateaubriand is seriously, seriously good, and there's a very solid selection of reds with which to wash it down.

The first of two steakhouses bearing Sophie's name, this Fulham favourite is still going strong since its very welcome arrival back in 2002. Given the name you might think that this is a dainty affair but you'd be wrong - the steaks coming from the very competent kitchen are big, butch and downright delicious.
