The Best Turkish Restaurants
You might be forgiven for thinking that the best Turkish restaurants in London only extend to your average late night kebab – but only if you are particularly ignorant. And whilst it’s true that the best Turkish restaurants often excel in barbecuing marinated meat over flames licking up from white hot charcoal, there’s a lot more to this varied cuisine than many Brits think. So take a look at the list below, sample their wares and learn the difference between your kofte, kuzu and kagit.
Mangal 1
10 Arcola Street, Hackney, London, E8 2DJ
This hugely popular Turkish restaurant on Arcola Street in the depths of Dalston keeps the crowds coming in thanks not only to its incredibly good kebabs (go for the mixed kebab plate – it should feed a family of four for a week) but also thanks to some incredible mezze. It might be the very epitome of no-frills ocakbasi, but it’s also very good.

Hala
29 Green Lanes, Harringay, London, N4 1LG
Most Turkish restaurants on Green Lanes know what they’re doing, and this one in Haringay is certainly one of the best on that long road from the north London ‘burbs down to Dalston. They do the basics well but you can also sample dishes that aren’t always on the menus of similar establishments, such as manti – delicious little dumplings stuffed with beef and served with yoghurt, dried mint and loads of chilli.

Petek
96 Stroud Green Road, Finsbury Park, N4 3EN
The excellent handling of spice and good cuts of meat at this Finsbury Park restaurant keep it pretty busy but they also use their very fine charcoal grill to cook some very good bits of fish too – including an excellent seafood platter. Portion sizes are absolutely massive, so remember to ask for a doggie bag.

Iznik
19 Highbury Park, Highbury, London, N5 1QJ
Regularly heralded as the best Turkish restaurant in north London, this excellent little spot in Highbury excels thanks to the freshness of just about everything. Go for a mixed meat platter and marvel at the mountain of marinated chicken breast, lamb cutlets, shish kebab, liver and kofte. Again, portions are huge so don’t feel shy about asking to take some home.

Pasha
75 Wapping High Street, Wapping, London, E1W 2YN
Although the menu’s not exclusively Turkish, the Turkish dishes are probably the best thing about this elegant Wapping venue. The mezze is superb (with some excellent hummus and falafel) but the incik kebab is really very good indeed, with slow cooked lamb shank falling off the bone into pureed mash and a herby tomato and red wine sauce.

Gokyuzu
26-27 Grand Parade, Green Lanes, London, N4 1LG
This Green Lanes spot remains very popular indeed, and with good reason. The pide (like little pizzas) cooked in their wood-fire oven are superb, and the whole, very generous meal will come in at laughably low prices. A great venue for Turkish food.
