The Best Vegetarian Restaurants
It can be very tricky being a vegetarian, with so many London restaurants being unashamedly carnivorous and offering vegetarian options merely as an afterthought at best. Thankfully though, the best vegetarian restaurants in London know that quite a few people are partial to the delicate intricacies of a well made vegetarian dish, whether or not they're veggies themselves. As the standard of dining in London has improved, as have the meat-free options, so take a look at the list of the best vegetarian restaurants in London and prepare for what may well be a very surprising meal indeed.
Vanilla Black
17-18 Tooks Court, The City, London, EC4A 1LB
This excellent restaurant in the City elevates vegetarian food to something approaching (very closely, apparently) Michelin star status. The culinary guide currently ‘recommends’ them but if they keep knocking out dishes like brie ice cream with plum chutney, and the exquisite warm walnut panna cotta with Stilton dumplings then that star might be closer than they think.

The Gate Vegetarian Restaurant
51 Queen Caroline Street, Hammersmith, London, W6 9QL
This Hammersmith stalwart has been leading the way for vegetarian restaurants since it opened in ’89. The food is brilliantly put together, with clever sourcing and a judicious eye creating some simple, but very fine dishes. The Thai salad is exceptional, as is a very good new potato salad with loads of chervil and superb oven dried cherry tomatoes.

Alyn Williams at The Westbury
The Westbury, Bond Street, Mayfair, London, W1S 2YF
Although not strictly speaking a vegetarian restaurant, Alyn Williams’ sublime vegetarian menu is so good that it just has to be included. It’s remarkably good value and not only showcases Williams’ flair, but also the kind of impressive sourcing integral to dishes as delicate as these.

Manna Vegetarian Restaurant
4 Erskine Road, Primrose Hill, London, NW3 3AJ
Regularly cited as the best vegetarian restaurant in London, Manna is always busy, with a superb seasonal menu plumped up by some outrageously good daily specials. They do some excellent ravioli and quite possibly the finest Greek salad in London. However, it’s the chef’s salad that’s the one to go for – it’s huge and downright delicious.

Mildreds
45 Lexington Street, Soho, London, W1F 9AN
This very popular Soho haunt is definitely one of the best vegetarian restaurants, serving up some corking dishes from a cool little spot on Lexington Street. Pretty much everything they use is organic, and they do an awesome Sri Lankan sweet potato and cashew nut curry, as well as a very good salad studded with carrots, sultanas, fennel, sprouting beans, coriander and toasted seeds, all doused in a lovely apple, ginger and lime dressing.

NOPI
21-22 Warwick Street, Soho, London, W1B 5NE
Yottam Ottolenghi’s brilliant restaurant just round the corner from Carnaby Street showcases the wares of a man who really does know his stuff. The menu is divided into veg, fish and meat, with plenty on each section, so if you want to stay on the vegetarian side of things and enjoy roasted aubergine, black garlic, harissa and pine nuts, or heritage carrots, black olives, Belgian endive and orange vinaigrette then you can. And you’ll be very happy indeed.
