The Best Vietnamese Restaurants
Many Londoners grew up with little real appreciation of Asian cuisine, save for a bi-monthly ingestion of batter-heavy chicken balls washed down with some radioactive sweet and sour gloop. Praise be, then, to the Vietnamese restaurants of London town, who have shown just how vibrant, fresh and downright tasty it can be. We swear by Vietnamese salads here, but the list below comprises our favourite places for all manner of authentic Vietnamese dishes. And no, they're not all on Kingsland Road.
Mien Tay
180 Lavender Hill, Battersea, London, SW11 5TQ
It may be on Lavender Hill (miles away from most of us) but this place is well worth the trek. We think it's marginally better than its older brother on Kingsland Road so that's why it gets the nod. Excellent food at ridiculous prices - the deep fried seabass with mango is exquisite.

Viet Grill
58 Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London, E2 8DP
Okay, this one is on Kingsland Road but look, it's called the Pho Mile for a reason - there are some really good Vietnamese restaurants along there. Viet Grill remains one of the best, and it proves that you don't have to have worryingly basic decor to be deemed authentic.

Cay Tre
44 Dean Street, Soho, London, W1D 4QD
Traditionalists may prefer the one on Old Street but on recent visits we found it to be a little hit and miss. Perhaps they're putting all their effort into this Soho incarnation, where you can enjoy reliably brilliant food from somewhere suitably stylish for Soho.

Song Que
134 Kingsland Road, Shoreditch, London, E2 8DY
Another on Kingsland Road, foodies regularly opine on how good this place is, with particularly lavish praise given to its beef pho. We're guilty too - it is indeed absolutely phenomenal, and worth the trip all on its own. But while you're there, try their green papaya salad with prawn and pork too.

Cafe East
Surrey Quays Leisure Centre, 100 Redriff Row, London, SE16 7LH
Nominated by one of our team down south, this perhaps shouldn't be good, but it is. It knocks up a mean rare beef noodle soup and boasts a pretty formidable reputation amongst south London foodie folk. In fact it's so good that it's a weapon regularly wielded when the north/south argument rears its ugly head.

City Caphe
17 Ironmonger Lane, Bank, London, EC2V 8EY
The banh mi at this popular City venue is excellent, which explains why it's always rammed at lunch. Head down with a bit more time on your hands though and you'll be rewarded. The pho is pretty good but the salads exceptional - full of that characteristic sweet and sour zing.

Green Papaya
191 Mare Street, Hackney, London, E8 3QE
This Vietnamese restaurant on Mare Street, right in the midst of Hackney is definitely one of the best in London, with expert cooking, clean flavours, quality ingredients and, most importantly, some brilliant prices. And the spicy beef salad is something else.

Que Viet
102 Kingsland Road , Hoxton, London, E2 8DP
Another east London one, this Kingsland Road venue is cheap and cheerful but so very, very good. Don't expect too much space, or particularly courteous staff - they put all their effort into creating deliciously tasty (and sometimes wickedly hot) authentic Vietnamese food that demands you head back.
