Tired of perfunctory pubs and faceless bars? The Camel will sort you out with its quaint personality.

The Venue
With so many pubs and bars adopting the same style, it takes a real original to stand out from the crowd. The Camel manages this with its bold, tiled cabin appeal. Located on Globe Road, a short walk down Roman Road from Bethnal Green, The Camel exists in its own little world of high-end pub crawls, supported by the also excellent Florist a few doors down.

Within the tiled walls there is a modern glow over the traditional fixtures and fittings that splits the ambience of this pub between local and gastro with bold flowers printed on wallpaper, teasing the rich dark wood with precocious petals. The furnishings are plenty, both inside and externally - old dark wooden chairs are pushed under tables and large picnic benches sit under the sky in the alley outside. The darkness of the venue is cosy and it comes across cabin-like in its decorated simplicity making for a pleasant familiarity that dawns on you almost immediately upon arrival.

The Atmosphere
The Camel has no winning smile to flash and you could say there’s a curt cool about it - it knows it’s a good pub. Despite the effort in its appearance, the bar holds none of the standoffish hovering types of other gastro-style establishments and everyone finds a space moulded as if just for them. There is, of course, a strong local following here, one that is quick to snatch the picnic benches on the hot days and fill the biggest and best tables early in the evening. A moody welcome has been known to drench newcomers but it soon wipes clean and acceptance awaits. The crowd is a mix of characters and big sociable groups tend to dominate.

The Food
The menu at The Camel takes something of a traditional pub approach with home cooked pies a speciality priced at just under £9 to accompany a pint or two. Flavours range from chicken, to tarragon, bacon and wild mushroom.

The Drink
A carefully thought out selection of cask ales and lagers are pumped at The Camel, from the norm to more rare continental offerings. Paulaner Weiss and Adnams beer are a particular draw for beer lovers whilst lagers on tap include Fruli, Amstel and Becks Vier. The wine list offers a few choices of each colour available by the bottle or glass, starting at just £3 a glass (£12 a bottle).

The Last Word
This pub is a sophisticated soiree of good music, conversation and individual environment, supported by premium continental beers and the comfort of the classic British pie.
