The ViewLondon Review
The Castle is a popular Geronimo Inns pub situated in the middle of King’s Cross and Angel.
The Venue
You will find The Castle pub smack bang in the middle of the busy Pentonville Road. It’s not a road that you might expect to find a pub of this calibre. If you’ve ever driven down it, you’ll know it’s a bit of a grimy area, with lots of car fumes and lots of traffic jams. However, sitting prettily in the midst of it all is The Castle, a Geronimo Inns' pub which is immensely popular in the surrounding area. Downstairs is a homely, cosy room with one bar on the right and plenty of seating arrangements scattered around the room. The cushions and comfortable chairs show they want to create a relaxing environment for their punters, and the large panoramic windows in this bar create a bright atmosphere during the day; at night you can watch the busy road outside.
The Atmosphere
This pub has a calm, chilled atmosphere for after-work or evening drinking. It’s not that near any business districts, so the men in suits are limited. However due to the massive Jury’s Inn hotel next door you do get a nice mixture of people popping in, from business travellers and families, to the traders whose stalls are up the road on Chapel Market.
At the weekend it’s a well known venue for twenty and thirtysomethings, thanks to its welcoming decor and fantastic terrace – a vast open space that takes over the whole of the top floor. In the summer this area is packed with people enjoying a drink outside; in the winter there are heat lamps and people are still crammed out there, albeit wrapped up a bit warmer. In such a busy area, it’s a big selling point to have such a large outside space for drinkers.
The Food
A sumptuous and varied menu awaits anyone who plans on eating here. It’s a traditionally British menu, with starters such as English asparagus, feta and beetroot salad costing £6.75. The mains are hearty, and the wild boar and apple sausages served with creamed mash, onions and red wine gravy costs £10.75 - a decent price for the area. To finish off, try the Bramley apple pie with whipped cream (£5). The kitchen is open for lunch and dinner, Monday to Friday, and between 12-9pm on Saturday and Sunday.
The Drink
The Castle may be slightly too trendy to fulfil the ale-loving requirements of a seasoned CAMRA member, however they do have a small selection of real ales on tap, which might include Adnams and Doom Bar (both around £3.40 a pint).
The wine list is much more substantial and nicely complements the excellent food menu. A bottle of The Infamous Goose sauvignon blanc costs £21.60 or a Chilean merlot will set you back £16. The wine list is divided into sections depending on taste and region, so this should help you choose your tipple.
The Last Word
To make the most of The Castle head to their spacious roof terrace – it’s a great experience whatever the weather.
