The ViewLondon Review
A homely, modest local pub on Walthamstow High Street that’s well worth a visit - if only for the food. It might not look like much from the outside, but you’ll be glad you didn’t trust your first impression.
The Venue
For thirsty locals there are several pubs to choose from but little to visibly distinguish one from the other. To the naked eye, The Chequers is a grotty old pub not worth fighting your way through the Saturday market for. But despite its lack of curb appeal, inside it’s a nice surprise. Yes it’s a typical, old-fashioned pub with a 60s carpet, fruit machines and a clientele with an average age of 70, but it’s clean, comfortable, spacious and cosy at the same time. There’s a separate eating area usually reserved for diners, a couple of pool tables and enough nooks and crannies to provide privacy. Outside is a small beer garden looking out onto the High Street.
The Atmosphere
Punters include friends playing pool, families taking advantage of the cheap kids’ menu, couples having a quiet drink tucked away in the corner and merry regulars propped up at the bar (who will probably start a conversation with you if you linger long enough). Staff are always friendly and after a few visits they’ll probably remember you by name and always stop for a chat. They’re passionate about their food and service.
The Food
Generally the food is good; better than most pubs of its kind. The chilli con carne is tasty and the desserts (warm homemade chocolate pudding for £3.20) are worth saving room for. But the real surprise is their Thai menu. One word – delicious. Peek into the kitchen and you’ll see The Chequers has mostly Thai chefs back there, so it’s no wonder the food is so spot on. Don’t leave without trying the Thai green curry, it’s so good it’ll have you coming back again and again. If you go on a Sunday though, there’s only a limited menu on offer, including a traditional Sunday roast for £6.00. On weekdays until 9pm, you can get a meal and a drink for £5.00.
The Drink
There’s Amstel, Guinness, Carlsberg and Carling on tap among others, and the house wine, at around £3 a glass, is quite tasty too. Drop by on a weekday before 6pm and selected brands of beer are under £2 a pint.
The Last Word
If you live nearby, you’ll be pleased to have this as your local. If you live further afield, it’s worth the trip for the tasty Thai cuisine.
