The ViewLondon Review
Offering more than just a convenient location, the Clapham North is a large, almost imposing pub that beckons you in with its warm decor and a friendly, upbeat atmosphere.
The Venue
The Clapham North is a large pub found adjacent to Clapham North tube station, which makes it a very convenient stop off for commuters and people kick starting a night out in the area.
Inside, there are five plasma screens set across the spacious venue, which show all major sporting events, even opening their doors at 8am on a Saturday morning for rugby matches – now that’s dedication. There is also a small outside space available for alfresco drinking, making the perfect spot for people watching. Inside the decor is cosy and inviting and comes complete with a fireplace, perfect for snuggling up to on a cold winter’s night. Comfortable leather booth seating finishes off this welcoming pub perfectly.
The Atmosphere
There is a definite metro bar feel to the Clapham North. There’s a big Antipodean following here, so to make our friends from the Southern Hemisphere feel a little less homesick, a special Chicken Parmigiana night is held here on Thursdays. Live acoustic bands play every weekend - from Friday to Sunday - with the added bonus of a DJ on Saturday evenings playing house, hip hop, funk and soul. An all around party venue with many different faces, its eclectic nature ensures there’s more to this pub than first meets the eye.
The Food
The food menu is comprehensive at the Clapham North, offering a weekend brunch menu from 10am-5pm with pastries, croissants, muesli, granola, fruit, yoghurts and smoothies all very reasonably priced from £1-£3.50. All the popular fry-ups are also available from £5 and there’s a decent Sunday roast for £9. Snacks and bites start at £3.75, with a special lunchtime express menu being made available on weekdays, promising you your order within 15 minutes, comprising soup, a sandwich and a soft drink for just £6. Mains cost from £8.95, with sirloin steak with fries, tomato and mushrooms costing £12.95. Mouthwatering desserts are also on offer if you feel you have room for £4.50.
The Drink
Sol, Tiger, San Miguel, Budvar, Magners and Peroni are available in bottles. If you prefer draught though there's still plenty of choice and options include Heineken, Staropramen, Amstel, Stella, Guinness, Becks, Leffe, Hoegaarden and Addlestone cider. This being Clapham, there's still a market for cocktails which are generally £6.50 for popular choices such as mojitos or the authentic Prosecco based bellinis at £7. Jugs of Pimms (£15.95) are popular in summer when the bar does a roaring trade rain or shine.
There is also a good wine list with eleven whites offered in total. The house wine is £13 rising to £25 for a bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc. There are three choices of rose starting at £14 for the house. The house red is £13 and a French Bordeaux is £22. Prosecco comes in at £22, whereas if you prefer Champagne you can choose from Bollinger (£55) or Laurent Perrier Rose (£60).
The Last Word
The Clapham North is an inviting pub with friendly staff and a pleasant decor. Nothing is too much trouble here and with weekend entertainment this is somewhere you should definitely try.
