I go to this place all the time and i'm glad i hadn't read the other reviews until now or me and my workmates wouldn't have found our new 'regular'! The Thai food is excellent and i agree the Pad Thai wasn't the best but the manager proudly told us last month a new chef and recipe is in place and wow, what a difference.
price wise it's the cheapest in the area and that combined with the atmosphere, good drinks and a pool table to play at the back means we'll be going time and again to this one. ignore the people above and try for yourselves. finally not just another try-hard 'gastro pub', just good grub, good prices and nice people.

I have been to The Clerk & Well twice and I cannot fault the food. I have pretty high standards. Their Baked Salmon Miso is the star dish on the menu. I usually dislike cooked salmon but the fish is really silky and the miso is just right not strong at all. Another item to try here is the Wonton Soup, this is actually better than China Town. I am Chinese so I'm looking for proper ingredients. If you want a little snack with your beer you must go for the the "popcorn" Shrimp Tempura and Baby Pork Ribs. Very yummy! Overall, it's a pretty good place to dine. I think it's great for parties as well, as they have a beautiful private dining room.
When this was the Duke of York it was a good pub selling reasonably priced decent Thai food. Now it's under new management is has deteriorated to a 3rd rate Wagamamas! Where the previous Thai food was cooked by Thai's, the quality of the food is worse than a Iceland microwave meal. The portions are very small, the prices are high for what you get, the service is very poor. The staff are too over enthusiastic - they could at least wait until you're finished eating before removing your napkin and plates from the table! If they're going to cook Thai food, they should at least know how to do it! Thai curry shouldn't have the consistency of a broth, it should be thicker than gravy or at least as thick as the chef! All in all - avoid this pub. Expensive, waste of money. You will regret going there and be disappointed.
If the management are reading this, take note - go buy a Thai cook book for the person that cooks the food. I can't use the word Chef as that implies someone who knows about food. If they don't take heed of these reviews then they'll go out of business, then again, that might not be a bad thing!
