I visited the Commander on Wednesday night and to my surprise there was a jazz singer - she was great and the atmosphere was really good. The service was friendly and the Commander burger was excellent - definately one of the best in London!

Hmm, mixed reviews I see, reading earlier comments. Here's another that's not so great. From start – nowhere to hang our wet coats, but a weary ‘well, there’s a cloakroom upstairs – do you want me to run all the way up there with your coats?’ – to finish: why is it such a struggle to get a VAT receipt?

The seared tuna ‘sashimi’ was delicious, but I was still eating it when the waiter cleared my two friends’ plates and all the bread plates, despite the fact there was still bread and butter left (delicious bread).

220g fillet steak? Really? At £28 we thought, considering the size of it on the plate, that it would taste rather special. Sadly not, and cooked very well done rather than medium/well. I always think of a ribeye as an especially tender and succulent cut of meat. Not so tonight, but at only £18, what do you expect? Maybe it was less satisfactory because it was not cooked rare, as ordered. The swordfish was fine.

About that VAT receipt - it was suggested that I telephone the next day, and it would be put in the post. I declined, so the manager had to be sent for and 10 minutes later he arrived with some headed stationery with the VAT number on it. What’s going on here?

Went there with about two weeks ago with my parents as they came to visit me in London and we all had great time. Despite they were very busy everything was smooth, our waiter was sharp and politely explained everything we wanted to know.
We had steaks, they were delicious only mine was a bit undercooked. After they send it again from the kitchen there was a manager who came over to make sure everything was ok.
I can only recommend this place, was there few times when it was a pub and was really surprised how amazingly this place changed.

The Commander is my favourite Notting Hill local - I like to sit at the the bar, enjoy a few Oysters and chat to the very friendly bar staff!

I went here last night with friends and loved it!

There was a relaxed feel and the food was excellent so were the cocktails!

It's not our first visit and things have definately improved over the last couple of months - warm atmos, the service seems sharper, friendly waiters/bar staff and the food is very good.

give it a go!!

Have been looking forward to trying this place out for a while as it looked nicely refurbished and has a solid menu.

However, was extremely disappointed with our visit and we will not be returning. Went on a monday night without a reservation which was fine, we were able to choose a nice seat.

The waiter who was nice enough took our orders, half a dozen oysters and salad to start, porterhouse steak and big porterhouse salad for the main.

The salad came in 5 minutes but then we proceeded to wait 1 hour for our oysters.

I noticed when our oysters were ready, they sat on the counter for another 20 minutes before our waiter brought them over.

Two of the oysters wasn't properly cleaned so I had to spit them back out.

The mains were ok, the steak was nicely cooked but my big salad with seared tuna was nothing to rave about.

The worst thing was that when we got the bill, I politely indicated to the waiter that we will not be paying the 12.5% discretionary service charge tonight (which they put on there automatically).

He indicated that he didn't think it was possible but that he would check with the manager.

5 minutes later the manager came around and asked me what was wrong with the service, i told her about the delay and the oysters.

Her attitude was not of a manager that was concerned about the quality of the food, she was not sincerely apologetic and acted as if I was a fussy customer.

What I didn't like was the fact that I had to justify the reason for not wanting to pay the discretionary charge.

If they really wanted to find out about my complaint, they should have taken the service charge off without question and then asked me in the end for my feedback.

In addition, on hearing about the oysters, she didn't offer a discount for the mishap, proof that they were not concerned about quality of food.

We are going out about 3 - 4 times a week but this was the first time I was disappointed and aggravated enough to write my first review about a place ever...

Went on a Sunday at 12pm - lots of space available -we ordered after about 10min waiting at the table and proceeded to wait another 30-45 minutes for our order of two salads and one Sunday roast.

Two bottles of water and a bread basket later we asked about our food as we had a 3:15pm flight).

Only then (after more than 30 minutes) the waiter came and said that they only serve food that was on the Sunday menu - no salads at all as they were on the Bar-menu...

even though they handed out the menu and confirmed the order initially.

Waiting this time only to THEN tell the customers that they don't serve 2 out of the 3 ordered items is silly at best... no apologies, nothing...

In all, lousy service, ridiculous policies and a menu that doesn't inspire... lost me as a customer for good...

We have been on a Monaday, not a busy day, in fact we were four costumers in total. The staff including the management (five of them), were happily chatting away completly ignoring us.

No one to be seen at the bar, so after fifteen minutes of waiting we just wolked away,on our way out we politely said goobye, but even then didn't get any answer back.

Depressing. They've turned a nice pub into a ghastly American-style bar, where some of the food prices are "market" prices, which means you don't really know how much you're paying.

The staff have been told to be aggressive salespeople, as they're now expected, in the American fashion, to make their wages up by tips: has no-one told the Canadian manager that we don't particularly tip in pubs here?

Naturally, the staff are all fed-up. And, now they've got their little market up in the front garden there's nowhere to sit apart from out the front (the solicitors screwed up the use of the back garden). Have a look at the menus, they're slightly bizarre and the photographs mean that I won't be eating at the Commander any time soon!
