The County Arms is the kind of pub you’d expect to find in the country. Luckily for south west Londoners, it’s actually located in Wandsworth.

The Venue
The County Arms is a very pretty little (well, big) pub. The stunning white exterior painted with criss-crossed black lines immediately attracts attention. Inside, it’s a very well thought out pub that’s perhaps not as traditional as the exterior would have you believe. It’s clearly been renovated with shining wooden tables, comfortable armchairs, squishy leather sofas, pale green carpets, modern art, plenty of foliage and flowers, feature lighting and a gleaming corner bar. However, nods to its heritage are retained with beautifully restored fireplaces and ornate gilded mirrors. A pretty courtyard finishes off the space nicely, providing a popular alfresco spot for drinkers and diners.

The Atmosphere
Wandsworth pubs tend to attract loyal locals and The County Arms is no different. Whether it’s groups and families looking to enjoy a laid back meal or mates and couples out for a few drinks, the atmosphere here is happily chilled. It’s the kind of place where you’ll lose a few hours if you’re not careful. The staff are very friendly and service is efficient although during peak times you may end up waiting longer than usual for your drink.

The Food
The food at The County Arms is popular and makes up a sizeable portion of their business. The food is also on the nicer side of the standard Young’s offering. Rustic bread (not any old bread here!), fried quail egg, venison meatballs, grilled swordfish and seared breast of pheasant are just some of the interesting dishes on offer. Even though they go above and beyond the usual burgers and pies, the prices are still excellent with most coming in at under a tenner. No wonder the empty plates soon pile up.

The Drink
Ready for this? On draught they have Kronenbourg, Heineken, Fosters, Amstel, Staropramen, Leffe, Peroni, Dry Blackthorn, Guinness, Young's Bitter, Young's Special, St George's Ale and Wells Bombardier, with seasonal extras of Young's Waggledance, Winter Warmer, Young's Golden Zest, Christmas Ale, Deuchars and St Austell’s Tribute Ale. Phew. Basically, it’s the kind of selection you could only sample across several visits unless you have the constitution of an ox. Or a hardened drinker. Otherwise, a sizeable wine menu is also popular with diners.

The Last Word
If you live nearby or just happen to be visiting Wandsworth, then The County Arms is one of those pubs you should make a point of visiting. Even if it’s just to take a few photos and pretend you went away for a long weekend in the country.
