Set in the heart of pretty, rural Barnes, The Depot boasts stunning views over the Thames. The VenueNow in its 20th year, this local institution has had a refit, eschewing white walls and minimalist decor for a warmer, more loft-like feel, with lots of bare brick, reclaimed parquet and pleasingly aged tables.
On long summer evenings the sun slants through the large windows and sparkles on the river as it sets; winter nights are cosy, with the lights reflecting on the water as it slips past below.
The AtmosphereDining at The Depot is a relaxed affair. The service is genuinely friendly and helpful, and children are welcome. There’s no pressure to leave, and if you prefer you can pull up a stool, grab a newspaper and eat at the bar.
Barnes is a resolutely middle-class suburb and this is reflected in the clientele; don’t come expecting Hoxton chic, but if you’re a rowing fan there’s no better place to watch the boat race.
The FoodThe best way to ensure repeat visits when most of your customers are local is to constantly offer something new, and this is something The Depot are very good at. The Modern European menu relies heavily on fresh and seasonal foods, with lots of vegetarian options; as well as the a la carte there’s also a set menu, which is good value.
Dishes are simply and unfussily presented, a slightly heavy hand with the salt being only a minor caveat. An accessible, well-thought-through wine list shows a good range of prices and includes lots of wines by the glass.
The Last WordIt’s easy to see why the locals consider The Depot to be such an asset to the area. It’s unpretentious, relaxed and good value for money, and with those river views it could probably get away with a lot less. It’s clearly being run with thought and care, and deserves another 20 years’ success.
