Impressed with the food , very authentic with excellent cocktails and service . However seem very busy lucky we have booked and I would recommend to make a reservation especially on a Sunday evening since it seemed the restaurant was in full capacity. I also disagree with some of the review written either they are biased or untrue, since we are Asians we have found the food to be very tasty, unless the restaurant has changed managements, chefs etc compared in the past we be back for sure , one of the best thai restaurants in the area.
I have just returned from The Elephant Royale, & I will never go back! The bar staff had no knowledge of what they were selling, the service was appalling, & the food cold. They were so long at serving our table that one of our party had to leave after the soup, yet they still insisted that she paid the full price. We were booked for 7.30, yet the main course was not served until after 10pm. We had almost given up when it did arrive. The dessert was unimaginative, & there was no choice.
I went here for a meal out with a large party of people in February and we all loved it.
The service was brilliant, especially considering people arrived at different times.
The food and the cocktails were delicous and we felt it was worth the money.
Avoid this restaurant if you can. Terrbile mananger and poor quality and over priced food
I took my Fiance who is Thai to this restaurant. First impressions were very nice decor, but that's where it ends. The waitresses were Malaysian not Thai and couldn't speak English very well. Give this place a miss.
We went for a meal at The Elephant Royale for my husband's birthday. The food was nice, not remarkable, about average for a decent Thai. The service however was appalling! The staff were rude and extremely unhelpful. We were kept waiting for ages at our table and when we did try and signal a waitress over they looked put out and disinterested.
We had the assistant manager argue with us when we got the bill as they tried to charge our 2 year old for the Sunday buffet when she hadn't eaten a thing, apart from drinking the milk in her bottle! We were told that if a child so much as touches a noodle on our plate we would be charged.
We certainly will not be going back to The Elephant Royale again and would recommend others stay clear. Nam Am in Wansted is much much better.
The Elephant Royale is a beautiful restaurant which is always my first choice when I really want to impress.
The waiting staff are friendly, efficient and obliging and the food exquisite. Go on a Friday or Saturday night if you want the bonus of live music.
My only complaint is that The Elephant Royale has a smoking policy so you could be unfortunate enough to have someone else's cigarette smoke spoil your meal. Other than that, this place comes highly recommended so do give it a try.
I have to disagree with the last review (29/09/04). My partner & I have been to the Elephant Royale twice. I'm taking her tonight simply because of the exquisite food, fabulous presentation and friendly service.
Yes, the language barrier can sometimes present a situation but never a problem - the staff appear to be as keenly aware of the barrier as the patrons and (in my opinion) do their utmost to counter it.
It's certainly not cheap but it's not the most expensive restaurant in East London. The live music adds a nice ambiance but admittedly this is decided by music taste.
Anyhow, I trust this review serves to balance your cognitive process in deciding whether this restaurant is for you.
Bon appetit!
The layout at Elephant Royale is very nice but thats where it ends... The service was appalling. When we asked not to be so near to the Live Music, the waitress looked shocked and asked 'so you dont like music?!!' There didnt appear to be designated smoking and non-smoking areas and even if there were, we were not asked. The waitress then dropped the menus about 3 times and hardly spoke any English, mind you I dont think any of them did. When ordering, we had to repeat every dish twice due to the language barrier. One of the dishes that my wife ordered asks you to specify which strength you would like but we were not asked. I had to order our prawn crackers twice before they arrived and when they did they were chewy. We both ordered soups for starters which tasted nothing like the description but more like Bovril. The main course was adequate, nothing special. Again, getting their attention so we could order a glass of water was virtually impossible and we were not asked once about the meal. They were hardly rushed off their feet; it was a Wed night (29/09/04) and there were only about 2 other couples in there. The Dessert was nothing special and we shared the chocolate mousse. We also had to ask them to light our candle and remove the extra glasses that we didnt need. When the bill eventually arrived, it was £65!! Then the waitress came over and said she forgot to put the dessert and coffee on and this bumped it up to nearly £80 for the two of us. This restaurant has appalling service, poor-average food, annoying loud live music and extortionate prices. We will never go there again and we trust that you will read this and save your money for somewhere else.
