The ViewLondon Review
Is it a bar? Is a cinema? Is it a restaurant? No, it’s the Exhibit, and it’s all of the above and more. The VenueThe Exhibit is spread over three floors and genuinely does have something for everyone. The bottom floor is a lively bar with leather sofas and a giant aquarium, plus a beer garden for those who like a bit of fresh air (or a cigarette, whichever floats your boat). The next floor up is a candlelit restaurant serving fresh and tasty gastropub-style fare, and to top it all off (literally), the third floor is home to a cocktail bar and a cosy cinema and, if that wasn’t enough, also plays host to stand-up comedy nights.
The AtmosphereThe atmosphere depends on what you’re after and what floor you’re on. The bar downstairs opens late and attracts a bunch of up-for-it young things after a drink and a dance. The restaurant (with a splendid view of Sainsbury’s car park) is relaxed and romantic, and the cocktail bar is laid-back. The cinema shows everything from Sunday kids’ films to art house numbers.
The FoodIn the bar, there are plenty of nibbles and bar bites like nachos and spicy potato wedges, as well as burgers and brunch. The restaurant has a lot more to offer, with an impressive range of wholesome food, from steak to shellfish linguine. A starter of the 'Butcher's Board' boasts mouth-watering ham and cured beef, as well as olives, mustard and chutney. With some of the crispy and soft freshly baked sourdough bread it's a perfect start to the meal. The roasted breast of Gressingham duck is pretty special, served with berries, creamy dauphinoise potatoes and lavender honey, nicely cooked and pink in the middle.
The DrinkThere’s quite an extensive wine list to suit all budgets, and boutique beers for those who prefer the grain to the grape. Cocktails are well-priced and plentiful, with all the old favourites like Mojitos sitting alongside delicious concoctions like Ten-tation (Tanqueray 10 gin with fraise liquor, fresh strawberries, mint and basil with muddled lime).
The Last WordThe Exhibit ticks all the boxes in every sense of the phrase. The staff are friendly and the concept of the multi-functional venue is unique and hugely enjoyable.
