Once you battle through the crowds of flashy businessmen and women, you might find a quick lunch turns into a drinking session at this gastro pub with ultra-friendly staff and top quality food and drink.

The Venue
The Fence is situated next to the lower-quality Three Compasses, and it’s not surprising that the latter struggles to get bums on seats. Situated just a stone’s throw away from the tube, The Fence is adorned with leather high-backed chairs and solid wooden tables. Decor is tip-top, with deep tones of red to ensure you begin to doze off after a glass or two of Sancerre.

The Atmosphere
Because of its proximity to the City, the clientele mainly consists of those who work in the area. This does, unfortunately, mean that you’ll be subject to attention from sleazy bankers and power-hungry women, although once you battle to the bar, staff are friendly and helpful. Friday nights are more relaxed with anyone and everyone flocking to chill out after a hard day’s work. As the bar with the biggest beer garden in Farringdon, it’s not surprising that tables outside are like gold dust. For this reason alone, book in advance.

The Music
The subject of many a ‘guess the tune’ competition, The Fence plays an eclectic mix of classic rock and roll tunes and chart hits. This all changes on Friday night, with a regular DJ covering everything from D-I-S-C-O to electro and hip hop.

The Drink
Drink is expensive, but worth every penny. Although you may experience some white wine temperature issues, this doesn’t happen often enough to deter. Premium beers are on sale (including Fruli and Hoegaarden), which are perfect for glugging down in the beer garden, although above average in price for the area. If you’re planning a large one in The Fence, and you don’t happen to be a banker working round the corner, it’s probably wise to raid your savings first.

The Last Word
With beers served at perfect temperatures, and posh pub grub to rival a lot of the restaurants around Smithfield Market, The Fence is a top venue for after-work drinking, or a long business lunch if the company’s paying.
